The Induction Matrix is the end-game energy storage solution for Mekanism. If you’ve been generating massive amounts of power from your reactors, you’ll need an Induction Matrix to store it all. This tutorial walks you through everything you need to know about building, configuring, and using this powerful storage system.

What Is the Induction Matrix?

The Induction Matrix is Mekanism’s primary energy storage block designed to hold enormous quantities of energy. Unlike standard energy cubes, the Induction Matrix can scale to massive sizes and store terajoules of energy—far more than any other single storage solution in the mod.

Basic Features and Functions

Quick Charging

You can right-click anywhere on the Induction Matrix to access several convenient functions. One of the most useful features is the ability to directly charge your armor, whether that’s a Mek Suit or other Mekanism armor pieces. You can also charge individual items using the dedicated item charging slot.

Matrix Statistics

Right-clicking the matrix allows you to view important statistics about your energy storage, including current capacity, energy stored, input/output rates, and other relevant data at a glance.

Charging Items

The matrix has dedicated slots for charging armor and other items. For example, you can place your Configurator in the charging slot, and it will charge automatically from the matrix’s stored energy.

Understanding the Scale

The Induction Matrix can store a gargantuan amount of energy. To illustrate: when inputting energy through an Alternate Universal Cable connected to a creative energy cube, the input rate is approximately 4 gigajoules per tick, yet the matrix still fills slowly. The current storage capacity is measured in terajoules.

Matrix Size and Structure

Size Options

The Induction Matrix can be built at various scales. The minimum configuration is just one block in the center, but you can expand it to much larger sizes. The maximum size is approximately 17 by 17 blocks, making it comparable in scale to a large Fission Reactor.

Required Materials

To construct an Induction Matrix, you’ll need the following components:

Induction Casing – Made with steel and energy tablets. This forms the outer shell.

Induction Ports – Used for inputting and outputting energy to and from the matrix.

Structural Glass – Optional aesthetic component for the interior.

Induction Cells – Placed inside to increase storage capacity.

Induction Providers – Placed inside to increase input/output rates.

Purpose and Function

Induction Providers determine how much energy can be input to and output from your matrix per tick. Think of them as the “voltage” rating of your matrix. Higher-tier providers allow greater energy transfer rates.

Provider Tiers and Rates

The Induction Matrix comes in four provider tiers:

Basic Provider – 256 kilojoules per tick input/output

Advanced Provider – 2.0 million kilojoules per tick input/output

Elite Provider – 16 million kilojoules per tick input/output (approximately)

Ultimate Provider – Significantly higher transfer rates

Upgrading Transfer Rates

By replacing basic providers with higher-tier ones, you directly increase the maximum input and output rates of your entire matrix. If you upgrade from a basic to an ultimate provider, you’ll see a dramatic increase in how quickly energy can flow in and out.

Induction Cells

Purpose and Function

Induction Cells determine how much total energy your matrix can store. They act like the “battery capacity” of your system. More cells or higher-tier cells mean you can stockpile more energy.

Cell Tiers and Capacity

There are four cell tiers with the following storage capacities:

Basic Cell – 8 kilojoules

Advanced Cell – 64 kilojoules

Elite Cell – 512 kilojoules

Ultimate Cell – 4 terajoules

Scaling Storage with Multiple Cells

If you can’t afford expensive ultimate cells, you can fill your matrix with multiple basic cells. While they fill more slowly than a single ultimate cell, the total capacity becomes much larger. For example, filling the matrix with mostly basic cells increases overall storage significantly compared to having just one.

Mixing and Matching Components

One of the greatest advantages of the Induction Matrix is flexibility. You don’t have to commit to purely one tier. You can mix different provider tiers and cell tiers to achieve exactly the balance you want between storage capacity and transfer rate.

For instance, you might fill most of your matrix with basic cells for affordable storage, then add several advanced providers to boost your input/output rates without the full cost of ultimate components. Close the matrix back up, and you’ll see the stats update to reflect your new configuration.

Crafting Induction Components

The Lithium Dust Foundation

The core ingredient for all Induction Matrix components is lithium dust. To make lithium dust, you must first obtain lithium from Deep Dark or trade for it. Process the lithium in a Chemical Oxidizer to create gaseous lithium, then convert it to lithium dust.

Basic Component Crafting

Once you have lithium dust, the simpler components are relatively straightforward to craft. The basic tier requires lithium dust combined with energy tablets and basic cubes. The crafting process is affordable at this level.

Advanced Tier Progression

As you progress to higher tiers, the cost increases significantly. Each tier requires four of the previous tier’s component, plus lithium dust and increasingly advanced circuits. This creates a tiered upgrade path where advanced components need four basic ones, elite needs four advanced, and so on.

Automation Recommendation

Due to the expense of crafting higher-tier components, it’s highly recommended to set up auto-crafting systems using Mekanism’s crafting blocks. This will save you time and resources as you scale up your energy storage infrastructure.

Practical Applications

The Induction Matrix is designed to work with Mekanism’s late-game power generation systems, particularly the Fission Reactor and Fusion Reactor. These reactors generate enormous amounts of energy per tick, and the Induction Matrix is the primary solution for storing that output for later use.
