Mekanism Heat Generator Full Tutorial

Mekanism Heat Generator Full Tutorial

The Mekanism Heat Generator is one of the fastest early-game electricity sources available in the Mekanism mod. This tutorial will guide you through crafting, setting up, and efficiently operating your first heat generator to power your modded Minecraft world.

What is the Mekanism Heat Generator?

The Mekanism Heat Generator is an early-game power generation machine added by the Mekanism mod (specifically the Mekanism Generators module). It burns combustible items to produce lava internally, which is then converted into electrical energy. This makes it an excellent starting point for players new to Mekanism’s power systems.

Crafting Your Heat Generator

Building a Heat Generator requires simple materials that are available very early in your playthrough. You will need:

Iron

Furnace

Wood

Copper

Understanding Power Output

When you look at a Mekanism machine, you’ll notice small green circles on certain sides. These green circles indicate where power will output from the machine. For the Heat Generator, understanding these output points is crucial for connecting your power distribution network.

Energy Storage and Transport

Basic Energy Cube

To store the energy your Heat Generator produces, you’ll want to craft a Basic Energy Cube. This machine is simple to craft and serves as your early-game energy storage solution. Unless you’re running pipes directly from one machine to another, an energy cube is essential for managing power flow.

Basic Universal Cable

To transport power from your Heat Generator to your energy cube or other machines, use Basic Universal Cables. These cables connect your machines and allow energy to flow throughout your setup.

Operating Your Heat Generator

The Heat Generator Interface

When you open your Heat Generator, you’ll see three key areas:

Center tank: This is empty initially and will fill with lava as items burn

Left slot: This is where you place items to burn

Right side: Displays stored energy (which will immediately transfer to connected energy cubes)

Fuel Efficiency Comparison

Oak Logs: Burns quickly but provides minimal energy output. These are best used when you have no other fuel source available.

Coal: Burns at roughly the same speed as oak logs but provides significantly more energy per item. This represents a much better value for your fuel investment.

Coal Blocks: The most efficient fuel option. Using blocks of coal will fill your Heat Generator’s energy output substantially and is recommended for sustained power generation.

Energy Flow

You may notice that the Heat Generator’s internal energy storage doesn’t increase even as it’s producing power. This is because energy is being immediately drawn out through your connected cables into your Basic Energy Cube. You can verify this by watching the energy level in your energy cube increase as the Heat Generator operates.

Automating Fuel Input with Logistical Transporters

For a more convenient setup, you can automate fuel delivery to your Heat Generator using Mekanism’s Basic Logistical Transporters. This allows you to automatically feed combustible items into the machine without manual placement.

Setup Steps:

Place Basic Logistical Transporters from a fuel source (such as a chest containing logs or coal) toward your Heat Generator

Use the Mekanism Configurator tool (which requires a small amount of power) to configure the transporters

Shift-click twice on the source chest to set it to “pull” mode

Important Connection Rules

When using logistical transporters with your Heat Generator, remember these critical rules:

Fuel input must be on the front of the Heat Generator — it cannot accept fuel from the sides

Energy output always comes from the back of the machine

Items cannot be inserted from the side faces

What Fuel Can You Use?

The Heat Generator can burn any combustible item. Common fuel sources include:

Wood and wooden planks

Logs (oak, birch, spruce, etc.)

Coal

Coal blocks

Other mod items that are combustible

Summary

The Mekanism Heat Generator is an excellent early-game power solution that requires minimal resources to craft and operate. Start with whatever combustible materials you have available, but prioritize coal blocks for the best efficiency. Connect your generator to a Basic Energy Cube via Basic Universal Cables, and optionally automate fuel delivery with logistical transporters. Remember: fuel goes in the front, energy comes out the back. With this setup, you’ll have reliable power to run your early-game Mekanism machines.
