How to Use Crab Traps & Fish Bait in Society Sunlit Valley

Crab traps are an essential tool in Society’s Sunlit Valley modpack for obtaining valuable resources and rare materials. This guide will walk you through the complete process of crafting, baiting, and using crab traps to generate infinite fish and other valuable items.

Getting Started: Crafting Your First Crab Trap

Before you can begin trapping crabs, you’ll need to craft your first crab trap. To do this, you’ll need two primary materials:

Aquamarine or Pearl — Aquamarine is the most accessible option and can be found in the Skull Cavern

Rope — Rope can be crafted from straw

Once you have these materials, you’re ready to begin the crab trap process.

Understanding Crab Trap Bait

Basic Worm Bait

The foundation of the crab trap system is bait. The simplest bait to create is worm bait, which you can make by placing worms into a crafting table. Worms can be traded from the Fish Art Trader, and doing so will give you a substantial amount of crab trap bait.

What You Can Get from Basic Crab Traps

When you place a crab trap with basic worm bait, you’ll receive a variety of resources including:

Various fish species

Neptuneium nuggets (rare)

Other miscellaneous materials

Note: If your primary goal is obtaining Neptuneium, crab traps are not the preferred method. Refer to dedicated Neptuneium farming guides for more efficient strategies.

Advanced Baiting: Creating Specialized Fish Baits

The Bait Maker Machine

To unlock the full potential of crab traps, you’ll need to craft a Bait Maker. This machine is crucial for converting fish into specialized baits that guarantee specific outputs from your crab traps.

Obtaining Neptuneium Ingots

To get started with the Bait Maker system, you’ll first need Neptuneium ingots. You can obtain these by:

Placing basic worm crab trap bait into crab traps and collecting the Neptuneium nugget drops

Fishing up an Opportunity fish and cutting it on a cutting board

Converting Fish to Neptune Bait

Once you have Neptuneium fish, place it into the Bait Maker. The machine will convert the fish into Neptuneium bait. The process takes one in-game day, and you’ll receive one Neptuneium bait as output.

When you return the next day, take your freshly made Neptuneium bait and place it into a crab trap. This guarantees that you’ll receive Neptuneium from the trap, creating a renewable cycle.

The Infinite Fish Loop

The beauty of the crab trap and bait maker system is that it creates an infinite resource generation loop. Here’s how it works:

Fish up a Neptuneium fish (or obtain one through other means)

Place the Neptuneium fish into the Bait Maker

Wait one in-game day for the bait to be created

Place the resulting Neptuneium bait into a crab trap

Receive Neptuneium from the crab trap

Repeat the process indefinitely

This system allows you to generate infinite fish while maintaining a renewable source of Neptuneium materials.

Advanced Crab Trap Variants

Deluxe Crab Trap Bait

If you want improved results from your crab traps, you can create Deluxe crab trap bait. To do this, place regular crab trap bait into a Deluxe Worm Farm, which requires Neptuneium to operate. The Deluxe bait provides better output results, though the improvements are not guaranteed with each trap.

Mana Crab Trap Bait

There is also a Mana variant of crab trap bait available in the Britannia dimension. If you have access to Britannia content, you likely already understand the broader crab trap mechanics.

Summary

Crab traps in Society’s Sunlit Valley are a powerful tool for resource generation when properly utilized. Start by crafting basic worm bait traps, progress to obtaining Neptuneium ingots, and then establish the Bait Maker loop for infinite, renewable resources. With patience and the right setup, you’ll have access to a steady supply of valuable fish and materials for your gameplay progression.
