How to get to the Nether and Undergarden In Beyond Depth

How to Get to the Nether and Undergarden in Beyond Depth

In the Beyond Depth modpack, getting to the Nether isn’t as simple as throwing together a obsidian frame and grabbing some flint and steel. You’ll need to visit the Undergarden first and earn your way in. This guide walks you through every step — from building your first portal to unlocking access to the Nether.

Step 1: Build the Undergarden Portal

To reach the Undergarden, you’ll need to construct a stone brick portal frame — similar in shape to a standard Nether portal, but built entirely from stone bricks.

Crafting the Catalyst

Once your frame is built, you’ll need to craft a Catalyst to activate it. The recipe requires:

1x Diamond

Iron

Gold

It’s a fairly accessible recipe, but it’s recommended that you have at least diamond-tier gear before heading in — the Undergarden can be dangerous.

Activating the Portal

Right-click your Catalyst on the portal frame, just as you would use a Flint and Steel on a Nether portal. This will open a glowing portal to the Undergarden.

Step 2: Navigate the Undergarden

Once you step through the portal, you’ll arrive in the Undergarden. Your next objective is to find a very specific structure. Open your map and look for a large labyrinth of corridors — it’s quite distinctive and easy to spot once you’ve explored a little.

Enter the labyrinth through its barred entrance and head inside. Think of it as a roguelike dungeon — full of loot chests and hostile mobs to fight through.

Finding Forgotten Guardians

Inside the labyrinth, you’ll encounter enemies called Forgotten. These standard mobs aren’t too threatening, but what you’re really hunting for are the Forgotten Guardians — a rarer and more powerful variant found deeper in the dungeon.

Collecting Forgotten Nuggets

When you defeat a Forgotten Guardian, it will drop Forgotten Nuggets. Collect as many as you can — you’ll need to craft these into a Forgotten Ingot.

Forgotten Ingots can also be used to craft powerful gear such as the Ancient Sage Bow, so it’s worth farming a few extras while you’re down here.

Pro Tip: Getting Back Out

Before you dive too deep, consider either setting a waypoint on your map to locate your portal on the way back, or bringing a second Catalyst with you so you can build a new portal frame and exit from within the Undergarden — just like you would return from the Nether.

Step 3: Unlocking and Entering the Nether

Now that you have your Forgotten Ingot, head back to the Overworld. Build a standard Nether portal and light it with a Flint and Steel as normal.

If you try to enter the Nether without having obtained a Forgotten Ingot, the game will block you with a chat message reading: “Please obtain a forgotten ingot to enter the Nether.”

You Don’t Need to Keep the Ingot in Your Inventory

Here’s an important detail: once you have obtained a Forgotten Ingot at any point, the game registers this permanently. You do not need to keep the ingot in your inventory to pass through the Nether portal. Feel free to store it at home or discard it to free up inventory space — your access to the Nether will remain unlocked.

Step through the portal and you’re in the Nether!

Summary

To reach the Nether in Beyond Depth, you must first travel to the Undergarden by building a stone brick portal and activating it with a crafted Catalyst. Inside the Undergarden’s labyrinth dungeon, hunt down Forgotten Guardians to collect Forgotten Nuggets, craft them into a Forgotten Ingot, and then return to the Overworld. Once you’ve obtained that ingot — even just once — your standard Nether portal will work as normal. It’s a gated progression system, but a rewarding one!
