How to Breed Rats in the Rats MC Mod
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the complete process of breeding rats in the Rats mod for Minecraft. Whether you’re new to the mod or looking to expand your rat colony, this tutorial covers everything you need to know—from setting up a cage to successfully breeding your first litter.
Getting Started with a Rat Cage
The first step in breeding rats is to place down a cage. The cage size is flexible and doesn’t impact breeding success—you can use a 1×1, 2×2, 3×3, or any other configuration that works for your setup.

Once your cage is placed, you’ll need to gather your breeding pair. Ideally, you should use tamed rats, though you can also acquire rats from a rat sack if necessary.
Selecting Your Breeding Pair
To release a rat from the cage, simply right-click on it. The rat will be released and you can then manage it further.

To pick up a rat and carry it, hold Shift and right-click. You’ll see the rat appear on your shoulder or head, indicating it’s been picked up successfully.

Before placing rats in your cage, you need to determine their gender. Right-click on a rat to check if it’s male or female. You must have one male and one female rat for successful breeding.

Placing Rats in the Cage
Once you’ve identified a male rat, hold Shift and right-click to pick it up. Then right-click on your cage to place the rat inside.

Repeat this process with a female rat. Right-click on the female rat to confirm its gender, shift right-click to pick it up, and then right-click it into the cage alongside the male.

Using the Rat Breeding Lantern
The final and crucial step is to craft and place a Rat Breeding Lantern into the cage. This item is essential for triggering the breeding process.

Simply right-click the Rat Breeding Lantern into the cage with your male and female rats inside. You’ll notice little love hearts appearing around the lantern, indicating that breeding mode is active.

Breeding Results and Baby Rats
With a male rat, a female rat, and the Rat Breeding Lantern all in the same cage, your rats will automatically begin to breed. You don’t need to feed them or provide any additional care—the breeding process is entirely automatic.
Shortly after activation, you’ll see a small pink blob appear on the floor of the cage—this is a baby rat. Each breeding cycle will produce offspring, allowing you to expand your rat colony over time.

Summary
Breeding rats in the Rats mod is straightforward once you have the right components. Here’s a quick recap of what you need:
One cage (any size)
One male rat
