Demon Will & Hellfire Forge Tutorial
Blood Magic: Demon Will & Hellfire Forge Tutorial
Ready to push deeper into Blood Magic? In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about farming Demon Will, building a Hellfire Forge, and crafting powerful items like Tantaric Gems and the Sentient Sword. Follow along step by step — this is beginner-friendly, so don’t worry if you’re just getting started.
Step 1: Crafting Soul Snares at the Blood Altar
Before you can get your hands on Demon Will, you’ll need to craft a Soul Snare. Head to your Tier 1 Blood Altar — the one you’ve already built — and place some string into it. This only requires half a bucket of blood, so it’s a very affordable early-game recipe. Right-click the string onto the Blood Altar while it has blood in it, and after a short wait, you’ll receive a Soul Snare. Make sure to craft a few of these, as you’ll be using them to collect Demon Will.

Step 2: Farming Demon Will from Mobs
With your Soul Snares in hand, head out and find a hostile mob — a zombie works perfectly for this. Throw your Soul Snare at the mob by pressing your throw key, just like throwing any item. You’ll know it worked when you see small white bubbles appearing around the mob. Once those bubbles appear, kill the mob. It’s important that you throw the Soul Snare before you kill it — that’s what triggers the Demon Will drop. When the mob dies, it will drop a glowing, plasma-like substance. That’s your Demon Will. Pick it up, and you’ll see a “Will Quantity” value appear at the top of your screen.

Step 3: Building the Hellfire Forge
Now that you have some Demon Will, it’s time to craft the Hellfire Forge. You’ll need some Blank Slates for this — craft those by placing stone into your Blood Altar. Combine your Blank Slates with the other required ingredients in your crafting table to produce the Hellfire Forge, then place it down in your base. This block is your primary crafting station for all Demon Will-based recipes going forward.

Step 4: What Can You Craft in the Hellfire Forge?
The Hellfire Forge opens up a wide range of powerful crafting options. Here’s a quick overview of what’s available:
Charges
You can craft several types of charges inside the Hellfire Forge, including the Deforester Charge, the Tunneling Shaped Charge, and Deforester Charge 2. Many of these require a secondary ingredient slot — typically a Tantaric Gem — which we’ll be crafting shortly.
Sentient Tools & Weapons
Using just your Demon Will (no Tantaric Gem required yet), you can craft several sentient items including:
Sentient Pickaxe — uses Demon Will to power its full potential
Sentient Sword — requires a Petty Tantaric Gem
Sentient Shovel
Throwing Daggers

Step 5: Crafting a Petty Tantaric Gem
The Petty Tantaric Gem is the first gem you should aim to craft — it unlocks several important recipes. Open your Hellfire Forge. You’ll notice it has four input slots and one output slot in the middle. Place the following ingredients into the input slots:
Demon Will — in the right-hand slot
Redstone
Lapis Lazuli
Gold Ingot
Stained Glass — colour does not appear to matter
Once all ingredients are placed, you’ll see a progress bar begin to fill. When it reaches completion, your Petty Tantaric Gem will appear in the output slot. Collect it — this is a key crafting component for everything that follows.

Step 6: Upgrading Tantaric Gems
Once you have your Petty Tantaric Gem, you can upgrade it through several tiers using the same Hellfire Forge. Here’s the upgrade path:
Petty Tantaric Gem → use a block of Redstone, a block of Lapis Lazuli, a Diamond, and your Petty Tantaric Gem to craft a Lesser Tantaric Gem
Lesser Tantaric Gem → upgrade to a Common Tantaric Gem (requires Imbued Slate and more advanced materials)
Common Tantaric Gem → upgrade to a Greater Tantaric Gem
Each upgrade simply requires the gem from the previous tier plus the appropriate materials. Work your way up as your resources allow.

Step 7: Crafting the Sentient Sword
With your Petty Tantaric Gem ready, head back to the Hellfire Forge to craft your Sentient Sword. You’ll need a Petty Tantaric Gem and an Iron Sword. Place them in the correct slots and watch the progress bar fill — once complete, you’ll have your very own Sentient Sword.

How the Sentient Sword Works
The Sentient Sword replaces the need for Soul Snares entirely. Every time you kill an enemy with the Sentient Sword, it automatically generates Demon Will. Even better — that Demon Will is automatically collected and stored directly into your equipped Tantaric Gem. You don’t need to manually pick anything up.
If you already have raw Demon Will sitting in your inventory, you can also drop it on the ground and pick it back up. It will bypass your regular inventory and go straight into your Tantaric Gem automatically. For example, if you have 4 raw Demon Will and drop it, when you pick it up your gem’s Will Quality will increase by 4 — it won’t sit in your item inventory at all.

Summary
In this tutorial, you’ve learned how to craft Soul Snares at the Tier 1 Blood Altar to farm your first Demon Will, how to build and use the Hellfire Forge, and how to craft a Petty Tantaric Gem along with the all-important Sentient Sword. From here, focus on upgrading your Tantaric Gems through the Lesser, Common, and Greater tiers, and use your Sentient Sword to passively stockpile Demon Will as you explore. The deeper you go into Blood Magic, the more these systems will pay off.
