How To Increase Available Vis In Thaumcraft 6

Running low on Vis in your Arcane Workbench is one of the most frustrating early-game problems in Thaumcraft 6. Fortunately, there are a couple of reliable methods to boost the Vis available to you without having to relocate your entire setup. In this guide, we’ll walk you through two key solutions: the Workbench Charger and the Vis Battery.

Option 1: Move to a Chunk With More Vis

The simplest solution is to move your Arcane Workbench to a nearby chunk that naturally contains more Vis. Different chunks have different Vis levels, so sometimes a short relocation is all it takes. However, if moving isn’t something you want to do right now, read on for more permanent solutions.

Option 2: Use a Workbench Charger

The Workbench Charger is a powerful item that dramatically increases the Vis available to your Arcane Workbench. If you’re unsure how to unlock it, you can find it in Oramansi under Oramansi > Recharge Pedestal > Workbench Charger.

Once crafted, simply place the Workbench Charger on top of your Arcane Workbench. As a bonus tip, you can also place it on top of your Focal Manipulator — it works there too.

How the Workbench Charger Works

The Workbench Charger draws Vis from the surrounding 9 chunks rather than just the chunk your workbench sits in. The difference this makes is enormous — in testing, a workbench sitting in a chunk with only 5 Vis jumped to 742 Vis after placing the charger. That’s more than enough to craft freely without interruption.

Option 3: Use Vis Batteries

Another option available to you is crafting Vis Batteries. These can be placed near your workbench and act as a local Vis reservoir to supplement your chunk’s aura.

How Vis Batteries Work

Vis Batteries operate on a threshold system:

If the local aura is above 90% of its normal capacity, the battery will absorb Vis and store it.

If the aura drops below 75%, the battery will discharge and release that stored Vis back into the chunk.

This means if your chunk is being actively recharged — for example, by a nearby Silverwood Tree — and reaches 95% capacity, the battery will begin storing the surplus. Then, when you start crafting and your chunk’s Vis drops below 75%, the battery releases it back, effectively giving you more usable Vis in your workbench.

Vis Battery Drawbacks

Vis Batteries do come with a couple of limitations to be aware of:

Reaction time: While faster and more reliable than natural Vis crystals, the battery still takes some time to react to changes in the local aura.

Capacity: Each battery can only store 10 points of Vis. If you consume a lot of Vis during crafting, you’ll need to place multiple batteries to make a meaningful impact.

The good news is that you can use multiple Vis Batteries at the same time, so stacking several of them around your workbench is a perfectly valid strategy.
