Cognition Mod Full Tutorial (Experience Obelisk)

Cognition Mod Full Tutorial: The Complete Experience Obelisk Guide

The Cognition mod — also known as Experience Obelisk in versions before Minecraft 1.20 — is one of the most unique and rewarding experience-focused mods available. It lets you store XP, convert it into power for machines, strip enchantments from gear, transmute items, and even passively generate experience using infected bookshelves. This guide walks you through every feature from the ground up, so whether you’re brand new to modded Minecraft or just picking this mod up for the first time, you’ll know exactly what to do.

Core Crafting Materials

Before you can do anything in the Cognition mod, you need to understand its three foundational crafting components: Cognitive Amalgam, Cognitive Crystal, and Astute Assembly.

The primary ingredient is Cognitive Amalgam, which is crafted using copper ingots, Cognitive Flux, and a furnace. Cognitive Flux itself is straightforward — it’s made from lapis, nether quartz, and soil or sand. From there, you use Cognitive Amalgam with an emerald to craft Cognitive Crystals. The Astute Assembly is then made using one Cognitive Crystal along with redstone. These three items form the backbone of everything else you’ll craft in this mod.

The Experience Obelisk

The Experience Obelisk is the central block of the entire mod — it is literally what the mod was named after in earlier versions. Once placed, you can right-click it to open its interface. If you have experience on your character, simply press Store All to deposit it into the obelisk.

Each obelisk can store up to 100 kilo buckets of Cognitum — the fluid form that XP is converted into inside this mod. Every point of experience converts into 20 millibuckets of Cognitum. The full capacity of 100 kilo buckets equates to 1,072 experience levels. Once stored, that XP becomes a resource you can pipe into other machines throughout the mod.

Linking Machines with the Staff of Achievement

To connect the Experience Obelisk to other machines, you use the Staff of Achievement. The process is simple: shift right-click the obelisk first — you’ll see a message confirming the obelisk position has been saved. Then shift right-click the target machine to link it. That machine will now draw experience directly from the bound obelisk. You can also shift right-click a bound machine again to unbind it at any time.

The Experience Fountain

The Experience Fountain is one of the first machines you’ll want to link to your obelisk. Right-clicking it lets you set its output speed to one of four modes: Slow, Moderate, Fast, or Hyper. Once linked to an obelisk and activated, the fountain sprays experience orbs into the surrounding area.

You can activate the fountain using a lever via Redstone, or simply by standing on top of it — no Redstone required. When you stand on it, the experience flows directly into your character, drawing down the stored Cognitum in the linked obelisk in real time.

The Precision Dispeller

The Precision Dispeller is a powerful and practical machine. It allows you to selectively remove enchantments from weapons and tools in exchange for experience. For example, you can target Sharpness I on a sword and strip it off — the experience value of that enchantment is then returned to either the player or, if the machine is linked via the Staff of Achievement, directly to the bound Experience Obelisk.

The Precision Dispeller can also remove curses from weapons and armour, but this comes at a steep cost: 30 experience levels per curse. To summarise:

Removing enchantments → gives you experience

Removing curses → costs you 30 XP levels per curse

The Molecular Metamorphar

The Molecular Metamorphar is a transmutation machine that uses experience as fuel. It has three input slots and draws XP from a linked Experience Obelisk to process recipes. The interface displays the current XP stored in the bound obelisk and how much each recipe will consume. Link it to your obelisk using the Staff of Achievement by shift right-clicking the obelisk first, then the machine.

Example Recipe: Primordial Assembly

As an example, crafting a Primordial Assembly requires any sapling, an Astute Assembly, and a Gold Ingot. It consumes 350 XP and has a process time of 5 seconds. If you don’t have enough XP stored in the linked obelisk, the machine simply won’t start — so make sure you’ve stocked up first.

Transmutation Recipes

The Molecular Metamorphar really shines when used for item transmutation. Some examples include:

Netherite Scrap + Gold Ingot + Transforming Focus → Netherite Ingot

Sugarcane + Transforming Focus → Bamboo

Forgotten Dust + Fluorescent Jelly → Fluorescent Argour (more on this below)

You can press U on any item with Just Enough Items (JEI) installed to view all recipes available in the Molecular Metamorphar.

Linear Accelerator and Whisper Glass

The Linear Accelerator is a movement utility block — it pushes players (and mobs) forward when they land on it. It doesn’t grant a jump boost, but it does provide a solid horizontal launch. This pairs extremely well with Whisper Glass, a highly slippery block crafted from regular glass. Placing Whisper Glass alongside accelerators lets you build fast-travel corridors or mob-pushing contraptions. The accelerator launches, and the Whisper Glass keeps the momentum going.

Decorative Blocks

The mod includes two decorative storage blocks: Block of Cognitive Crystal and Block of Cognitive Alloy. These are purely aesthetic and serve as a compact way to store your crafting materials. Notably, both can function as beacon base blocks if you want to incorporate them into beacon builds.

Bookshelves and Enchanting Power

Cognition adds two upgraded bookshelves that enhance your enchanting table:

Archiver’s Bookshelf — Enchanting Power of 1.5 (crafted with written books). Better than a standard bookshelf.

Enchanted Bookshelf — Enchanting Power of 2.0, double that of a normal bookshelf (crafted with enchanted books).

Generating Experience with Biblia Phases and Argour

One of the most exciting systems in Cognition is passive experience generation using Biblia Phases. These items act as a parasite — when you right-click a bookshelf with a Biblia Phase, it becomes infected. Infected bookshelves slowly break down over time, emitting experience orbs as they degrade. You can check the durability of any infected bookshelf using the Staff of Attunement.

Eventually, a fully decayed bookshelf crumbles into Forgotten Dust. Combine Forgotten Dust with Fluorescent Jelly (crafted from sugar and chorus fruit in the Molecular Metamorphar) to create the base Argour block. On its own, base Argour does nothing — but it can be upgraded through infection.

Nutrient Argour

Right-click the base Argour block with a Biblia Phase four times to infect it fully. This upgrades it into Nutrient Argour. Every second, Nutrient Argour has a 0.5% chance to infect one adjacent bookshelf block. Place it surrounded by Enchanted or Archiver’s Bookshelves on the north, south, east, and west sides for maximum coverage. This creates a self-sustaining, permanent XP generation loop — no more manually crafting Biblia Phases.

Insightful Argour

Craft Insightful Argour in the Molecular Metamorphar using honeycomb and glowstone dust. This upgraded version is an infectious block that does not decay, and it uses a spawn delay system on surrounding bookshelves to produce more XP over a longer period.

Extravagant Argour

The most powerful tier is Extravagant Argour. It has a 2% chance per second to infect one adjacent block, and it also increases the orb value of all surrounding bookshelves, meaning you get more XP per decay cycle. It affects corner blocks too, though at a reduced rate — for best results, keep your primary bookshelves on the cardinal sides (north, south, east, west).

Utility Items

Cognition adds several handy consumable items and tools:

Bottle of Daydream — Resets your insomnia counter, preventing phantoms from spawning.

Bottle of Nightmare — Sends your insomnia counter to the maximum, almost guaranteeing immediate phantom spawns.

Flask of Poseidon — Places a block of water.

Flask of Hades — Places a block of lava.

Flask of Chaos — Erases any fluid block, regardless of fluid type.

Mending Neurojale — Restores the durability of damaged items. Can be used in an anvil.

Enlightened Amulet — Teleports nearby experience orbs directly to you and merges them for faster absorption. Activate with Shift Right-Click.

Cognitive Tools and Armour

The mod includes a full set of Cognitive gear — sword, tools (including a fishing rod), and armour. While the set doesn’t come with unique special effects, every piece in the set provides increased block reach and entity reach, making day-to-day mining and combat feel noticeably smoother.

Summary

The Cognition mod (formerly known as Experience Obelisk) is a brilliantly designed experience management mod that rewards players who invest in its systems. Start by crafting your Experience Obelisk and core materials (Cognitive Amalgam, Cognitive Crystal, Astute Assembly). Use the Staff of Achievement to link machines. Drain enchantments with the Precision Dispeller, transmute items in the Molecular Metamorphar, and build a passive XP farm using Biblia Phases and Argour. Add utility items like the Enlightened Amulet and the three flasks for quality-of-life improvements, and kit yourself out with Cognitive gear for the extra reach bonus. It’s one of the most unique mods available for Minecraft — highly recommended for any modpack builder or solo modded playthrough.
