How To Make & Use The Crucible In Thaumcraft 6

The Crucible is one of the most essential tools in Thaumcraft 6, allowing you to break down items into their magical aspects and craft powerful new materials. In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly how to craft the Crucible from a regular Cauldron, heat it up, and start using it to create your first recipes — including the very useful Nitor (Nightour).

Crafting the Crucible from a Cauldron

To get started, place a regular Cauldron down in the world. The Crucible is made by right-clicking a Salis Mundus directly onto the placed Cauldron — transforming it in place.

Prerequisite: Complete the First Steps Chapter

If right-clicking the Salis Mundus on the Cauldron doesn’t work, it’s because you haven’t completed the First Steps chapter in your Thaumonomicon yet. This step is mandatory. To unlock it, you must first craft a Thaumometer. Once that’s done, the transformation will work correctly.

With the Thaumometer crafted and the First Steps chapter completed, go ahead and right-click your Salis Mundus onto the Cauldron. It will instantly transform into the Crucible.

Setting Up the Crucible

The Crucible needs two things to function: water and a heat source. Use a bucket of water to fill it, then place a heat source underneath. Early game, a simple Netherrack lit with a Flint and Steel works perfectly. Once the water is added and heat is applied, you’ll see the water begin to bubble — this means the Crucible is ready to use.

Using the Crucible — Crafting Nitor (Yellow Nightour)

To find recipes for the Crucible, open your Thaumonomicon. Each recipe will show you the required aspects (magical essences) and a catalyst item needed to produce the result.

Reading the Recipe

For this example, we’re crafting Yellow Nitor. The Thaumonomicon shows the following requirements:

10 Potentia

10 Lux

10 Ignis

Catalyst: Glowstone

Finding the Right Items Using JEI

To find out which items contain the aspects you need, use JEI (Just Enough Items). Hover over an item and press Shift to reveal its aspect breakdown. For example:

A Torch contains 5 Lux, 1 Potentia, and 1 Ignis. Two torches will give you the 10 Lux needed.

A piece of Coal contains 10 Potentia and 10 Ignis — exactly what you need in a single piece.

Throwing Items Into the Crucible

Once you’ve identified your items, simply throw them into the bubbling Crucible. Toss in your one piece of Coal and your two Torches. Then throw in the Glowstone as the catalyst. The Yellow Nitor will automatically pop out as the result.

Pro Tip: Use Nitor as Your Heat Source

One of the first things you should do after crafting Nitor is place it underneath your Crucible as a permanent heat source. Nitor is an everlasting flame — it won’t burn out, it won’t hurt you, and it also doubles as a decorative light source. It’s the ideal fuel to keep your Crucible running long-term.

Warning: Managing Warp

Be careful not to throw too many items into the Crucible too quickly. You may notice a purple vapor rising from it — this is Warp, a dangerous side effect of reckless Thaumaturgy. Always allow this vapor to fully dissipate into the atmosphere before adding more items. Ignoring this can lead to some very nasty and unpredictable consequences.
