How to Make & Use Brooms in Hexerei – Complete Guide

Every witch needs a broom — and in the Hexerei mod, there are three unique brooms you can craft, each with different stats, crafting requirements, and upgrade potential. In this guide, we’ll walk you through where to find the required trees, how to craft each broom, how to ride them, and how to fully upgrade them with brushes, tips, satchels, and cosmetic charms.

The Three Brooms in Hexerei

Hexerei currently features three craftable brooms: the Willow Broom, the Mahogany Broom, and the Witch Hazel Broom. Each one offers a different balance of speed and control, making some better suited for early game and others for advanced exploration.

Where to Find the Required Trees

Before you can craft any broom, you’ll need to locate the right wood type. Each tree spawns in a specific biome:

Witch Hazel – Found in Birch Forests

Willow – Found in Swamps

Mahogany – Found in Jungles

How to Craft Each Broom

All brooms are crafted using a combination of an Item Cauldron and a Mixing Cauldron. The specific ingredients vary depending on which broom you are making.

Mahogany Broom

The Mahogany Broom requires Mahogany Logs, Netherite, a Mandrake Root, and a Bottle of Blood. To obtain a Bottle of Blood, place a Blood Sigil in your Mixing Cauldron, stand inside it, and jump up and down — then bottle the blood directly from the cauldron.

Mandrake can be found in Swamp biomes. They behave similarly to berry bushes — harvesting them can yield both the flower and the root.

Willow Broom

The Willow Broom is the most beginner-friendly option. It requires Willow Logs, Blocks of Gold, a Bottle of Blood, and a Mandrake Root. Notably, it does not require Netherite, making it much easier to craft in the early game.

Witch Hazel Broom

The Witch Hazel Broom requires Witch Hazel Logs, a Diamond, and some Bottles of Blood.

Differences Between the Three Brooms

Each broom has a distinct profile when it comes to speed, control, and special properties. Here’s a breakdown:

Willow Broom – Slow & Precise

The Willow Broom is the slowest of the three. This actually makes it ideal for early-game exploration and precise building, as its lower speed gives you more control over your movement.

Mahogany Broom – Fast & Fire Resistant

The Mahogany Broom is faster than the Willow and comes with fire and lava resistance — but only when it is stored as an item (i.e., not placed in the world). Once it is placed as an entity, that resistance does not apply. However, you can upgrade it with a special tip to allow flying through lava and underwater, which is covered in the upgrades section below.

Witch Hazel Broom – Balanced Speed & Control

The Witch Hazel Broom sits between the two — slightly faster than the Willow but not as quick as the Mahogany. It offers a good middle ground of speed and handling.

How to Ride Your Broom

Using your broom is straightforward. Follow these steps to get airborne:

Right-click the broom to place it in the world.

Right-click again to mount it.

Use Spacebar to ascend, and your standard movement keys to fly forward, left, and right.

Press Control to descend.

Press Shift to dismount.

Important tip: Always descend close to the ground before dismounting. If you press Shift while high in the air, you will simply fall — which can be dangerous or even fatal.

Broom Upgrades & Customisation

Hexerei includes a robust upgrade system for your broom. To access the upgrade interface, hold your broom, crouch (Shift), and then right-click on the broom. This opens a menu with several upgrade slots covering float mode, brushes, miscellaneous items, and satchels.

Float Mode

Inside the broom interface you will find a Float Mode toggle. When enabled, the broom hovers above the ground rather than resting on it. Toggle this on or off depending on your preference.

Broom Brushes

Brushes are a critical consumable for your broom. While flying, the broom continuously uses the brush — and brushes have durability. If a brush reaches zero durability, the broom will descend to the ground automatically. Always carry spare brushes on long journeys. All brushes can be enchanted with Mending and Unbreaking.

Brushes are crafted on a Drying Rack. Here are the three available brush types:

Wet Broom Brush (Basic)

The standard brush. You must first craft a Wet Broom Brush inside a Mixing Cauldron, and then place it on a Drying Rack to finish it.

Enhanced Broom Brush

This brush has twice the durability of the basic brush, enhanced by herbs. To craft it, you will need the following plants: Belladonna, Mandrake, Mugwort, and Yellow Dock. All of these can be found in Swamp biomes:

Yellow Dock – Swamp biome

Mugwort – Swamp biome

Belladonna – Swamp biome

Mandrake – Swamp biome

If you ever struggle to locate a Swamp biome, use the Dowsing Rod. Simply right-click it and then Shift + Right-click to have it point you toward the nearest swamp.

Once gathered, dry your herbs by right-clicking them onto a Drying Rack, then use them in the brush crafting recipe.

Moon Dust Brush

This is the most powerful brush. It makes your broom faster, especially during a Full Moon. Outside of a full moon it performs the same as the Enhanced Broom Brush. Moon Dust itself must be crafted in a Mixing Cauldron and can only be made during a full moon. To check the current moon phase, craft a Crystal Ball — it will display the current moon phase at any time, day or night.

Broom Frost Brush (Currently Unavailable)

The Broom Frost Brush appears in the guide book but currently has no crafting recipe. At the time of filming, this item has not yet been fully implemented into the mod. The developer has noted there are features still planned for future updates — if this brush becomes available after you watch this tutorial, drop a comment and an updated guide will be made.

To equip a brush, open the broom upgrade interface (Shift + Right-click) and place the brush in the designated brush slot. You’ll notice the broom’s appearance updates visually to reflect the new brush.

Miscellaneous Broom Upgrades

The miscellaneous upgrade slot offers a range of cosmetic and functional additions for your broom.

Gold Rings

Crafted in the Mixing Cauldron, Gold Rings are a cosmetic upgrade that attach decorative rings to the tip of your broom.

Broom Chain (Charm Attachment)

The Broom Chain is a unique upgrade. Take it to a crafting table and combine it with an item — for example, a cauldron — and it will attach that item to your broom like a key charm. It’s a fun cosmetic that gives your broom a personalised, witchy look.

Broom Netherite Tip

The Broom Netherite Tip is a highly useful functional upgrade. It allows your broom to fly through lava and fire without taking damage, solving the limitation mentioned earlier with the Mahogany Broom.

Waterproof Tip

The Waterproof Tip allows you to ride your broom underwater, opening up an entirely new dimension of exploration.

Satchel Upgrades

The satchel slot adds on-the-go storage to your broom. There are four satchel options:

Small Satchel – 9 inventory slots

Medium Satchel – 18 inventory slots

Large Satchel – 27 inventory slots

Ender Satchel – Extends into your Ender Chest inventory

There is also a Replacer upgrade, which automatically replaces a broken broom brush with the next available brush stored in the top-left slot of the broom’s inventory. This is a fantastic quality-of-life upgrade for long flights.
