In this guide, we’ll walk you through the complete process of making steel using the Modern Industrialization mod for Minecraft. Steel production is one of the key milestones in the mod’s progression, and mastering the steam blast furnace is essential for advancing further into the late-game content.

Overview of Steel Production

The primary method for creating steel in Modern Industrialization is through the steam blast furnace. However, before you can begin steel production, you’ll need to have already completed a few prerequisite steps, including setting up a coke oven and understanding steam generation.

Prerequisites

Coke Oven Setup

Before you can make steel, you must have a functioning coke oven. This machine produces coke, which is essential for steel production. If you haven’t already built a coke oven, refer to our dedicated “How to Make and Use a Coke Oven” tutorial or watch our beginner guide for comprehensive coverage.

Once your coke oven is operational, extract the coke from the output hatch—you’ll need this for the next steps.

Steam Generation

You’ll also need a reliable steam supply to power the steam blast furnace. Ensure your steam production system is already set up before proceeding.

Building the Steam Blast Furnace

Components Required

To construct a steam blast furnace, you’ll need the following components:

Item input hatch (for materials)

Item output hatch (for finished steel)

Fluid input hatch (for steam input)

Steam blast furnace block (made from fire clay bricks and a blast furnace in the center)

Fire Clay Bricks

The steam blast furnace itself is constructed using fire clay bricks. Each fire clay brick is crafted from four fire clay dust and clay bowls. You may have already created these components when building previous machines, but you can produce them in the four-chamber furnace if needed.

Machine Structure

The steam blast furnace is a 3×3×4 (three wide, three deep, four tall) multiblock structure. The entire interior should be empty except for the floors. Once placed correctly, right-click on the steam blast furnace block to verify the structure is valid—it will display a shape validation message.

Installing Hatches

After validating the structure, attach the necessary hatches:

Bronze item input hatch: Where you’ll insert coal coke

Bronze item output hatch: Where finished steel will be collected

Fluid input hatch: Where steam enters the machine

Ensure the fluid input hatch is properly connected to your steam supply system using fluid pipes and a pump.

Creating Uncooked Steel Dust

Before the steam blast furnace can produce steel, you need to prepare uncooked steel dust. This is the actual fuel for the smelting process.

Macerator Setup

First, you’ll need to process coke dust using a macerator (one of the bronze machines). Place your coke into the macerator to convert it into coke dust.

Mixer Setup

Next, use a mixer to combine the coke dust with iron dust. The recipe is as follows:

7 iron dust

2 coke dust

= 9 uncooked steel dust

Alternatively, you can craft uncooked steel dust directly in a crafting table using multiple iron dust and two coke dust.

Running the Steam Blast Furnace

Loading Materials

Once you have your uncooked steel dust prepared, place it into the bronze item input hatch of the steam blast furnace. You should see the machine light up, indicating it’s operational.

Monitoring Production

You can monitor the smelting progress by looking inside the machine. The status indicator will show how fast the current batch is processing.

Overclocking with Gunpowder

To significantly speed up steel production, you can overclock the machine. Right-click gunpowder on the steam blast furnace to activate overclocking mode. When activated, you’ll see smoke particles, and the machine will run at double speed for approximately four minutes.

This means you’ll produce steel twice as fast while the overclock is active—useful when you need large quantities of steel for your projects.

Collecting Your Steel

Steel will be automatically output into the bronze item output hatch as it’s produced. Collect your finished steel and use it for crafting advanced machines and components in Modern Industrialization.
