Alchemical Brass is an essential crafting material in Thaumcraft 6, and knowing how to produce it efficiently can save you a lot of time in the early game. In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly how to craft Alchemical Brass Ingots using the Crucible — including which aspects you need, the best item to source them from, and how to avoid dangerous flux buildup.

Prerequisites: Unlocking the Crucible and Alchemical Metallurgy

Before you can craft Alchemical Brass, you need to have the Crucible unlocked in your Thaumonomicon. Once you have it, open your Thaumonomicon and navigate to the Alchemical Metallurgy section. Here you will find the Alchemical Brass Ingot recipe. The recipe requires a Copper Ingot as the catalyst in the Crucible, along with 5 Instrumentum.

Finding the Right Source for Instrumentum

To figure out the best way to obtain Instrumentum, open JEI (Just Enough Items) and search for Instrumentum. You should see the aspect listed in the results.

Click on the Instrumentum aspect and press R on your keyboard to view its recipe — specifically, the Aspect from Item Stack view. Note that this feature requires an additional mod called Thaumic JEI, which is available on CurseForge. It is strongly recommended that you install this add-on, as it will display all the different items that provide each aspect.

To confirm this, find Flint in JEI and press Shift to inspect its aspects. You will see it contains 5 Terra and 5 Instrumentum — exactly what we need.

Crafting Alchemical Brass in the Crucible

With your materials ready, heat up your Crucible using fire, a torch, or any other suitable heat source. Then follow these steps:

Throw one Flint into the heated Crucible.

Throw in a Copper Ingot to act as the catalyst.

An Alchemical Brass Ingot will fly out of the Crucible.

Crafting Multiple Ingots at Once

You can batch-craft Alchemical Brass Ingots to save time. Simply throw in multiple pieces of Flint — for example, 5 Flint at once — and then continue throwing in Copper Ingots one at a time. Each Copper Ingot will catalyze one reaction, producing one Alchemical Brass Ingot per Copper Ingot added.

Managing Flux and Terra Buildup

Be aware that each piece of Flint also deposits 5 Terra into the Crucible alongside the Instrumentum. This Terra is not consumed by the recipe and will accumulate inside the Crucible over time.

If you notice a purple gas venting from the Crucible, that is excess Terra escaping because it has nowhere to go. It will slowly dissipate into the atmosphere on its own, which is normal in small amounts.

However, if you add too much material too quickly, the Terra buildup can overwhelm the Crucible and cause flux events — which can have very negative consequences, especially in early game. To avoid this, allow the Crucible to dissipate the excess aspects for around 5 minutes before crafting another batch. This is an important habit to develop early on.
