Mekanism SPS (Supercritical Phase Shifter) Tutorial

Mekanism SPS (Supercritical Phase Shifter) Tutorial

The Supercritical Phase Shifter (SPS) from Mekanism represents the absolute endgame content of the mod. This advanced machine converts plutonium and polonium into antimatter pellets, which unlock some of Mekanism’s most powerful features including super massive QIO drives, gravitational modulating units, teleportation units, and anti-protonic nucleosinforcer capabilities. This comprehensive guide will walk you through every step of building and operating the SPS.

Prerequisites: Gathering Plutonium and Polonium

Before you can construct the SPS casing, you’ll need to gather plutonium and polonium. These materials are expensive to produce but essential for the build.

How to Obtain Plutonium and Polonium

Both plutonium and polonium are produced through nuclear processing in Mekanism. Polonium is created in a Solar Neutron Activator using nuclear waste. Plutonium is similarly produced using nuclear waste in an Isotopic Centrifuge. If you’re unfamiliar with these processes, reference the Mekanism Fission Reactor tutorial and Fission Fuel tutorials available on the channel. The mod provides comprehensive guides from basic machines all the way through to building the Supercritical Phase Shifter.

SPS Casing Materials

To craft the SPS casings, you’ll need:

HDPE Sheets

Polonium

Plutonium

Building the Supercritical Phase Shifter Structure

Constructing the SPS requires careful placement of blocks in a specific pattern. The structure is complex but follows a logical design once you understand the layout.

Step 1: Create the Foundation Rows

Start by placing SPS casings in a pattern: 1-2-3, then 1-2-1-2-1-2, creating a hole in the middle. This forms the basic framework of your structure.

Step 2: Add Center Port

In the middle of your structure, place an SPS Port. This port is crafted using four SPS casings, making it an expensive component. The port serves as a critical interface for your machine.

Step 3: Place Exterior Casings

On the outside edges, place three casing blocks on each side. Continue this pattern so you ultimately have 5 rows of three casings each (totaling 15 casings on the exterior). Then add casings to both sides to complete the basic rectangular frame.

Step 4: Fill in the Gaps

Fill in the corner gaps with additional SPS casings. Place one casing in each corner section to solidify the structure. This step requires careful placement to ensure the machine is properly formed.

Step 5: Complete the Top Section

Mirror the bottom layer by placing three casings on top, in the corners, and filling in the center section just as you did for the bottom. Place reactor glass in the appropriate positions as shown in the tutorial.

Step 6: Verify Completion

When the Supercritical Phase Shifter is properly constructed, it will display red dots at completion. You can right-click anywhere on the structure to view the internal interface, which provides a simple display of the machine’s status.

Installing Supercharged Coils and Ports

The SPS requires additional components beyond the basic structure to function properly.

Crafting Supercharged Coils

Supercharged Coils are essential components that must be placed on each port. They require:

Polonium

Lasers

Ultimate Control Circuits

Copper

Attach one Supercharged Coil to each port on your SPS structure.

Port Configuration

For optimal operation, place ports on every middle section: the bottom, each of the four sides, and the top. This allows for balanced input and output distribution. While you can operate with fewer ports, using all positions provides the best performance and faster reaction times.

Operating the Supercritical Phase Shifter

Once your SPS is constructed and equipped with coils and ports, operation is straightforward but requires proper configuration.

Power Input

Connect power to every port equipped with a Supercharged Coil. The machine consumes significant amounts of energy, so ensure your power generation can sustain it. Once power is supplied, the reaction will initiate automatically.

Material Input and Output Configuration

You’ll need three distinct port types for operation:

Power Input Ports: Four ports with Supercharged Coils to supply energy

Polonium Input Port: A dedicated port for pumping in polonium fuel

Antimatter Output Port: Use a Configurator and shift right-click to designate an output port for your antimatter

Once configured, polonium will be consumed and converted into antimatter. The progress can be monitored through the machine’s interface.

Using Antimatter: End Products

The antimatter produced by the SPS is the gateway to Mekanism’s most powerful items and features.

Chemical Crystallizer

Process your antimatter through a Chemical Crystallizer to create Antimatter Pellets. These pellets are required to craft the game-changing items mentioned at the beginning of this guide: super massive QIO drives, gravitational modulating units, teleportation units, and more.

Anti-Protonic Nucleosinforcer

Alternatively, antimatter can be fed into an Anti-Protonic Nucleosinforcer, which produces a wide variety of valuable items through transmutation:

Skeleton Skulls (and colored variants)

Quartz blocks from colored walls

Hearts of the Sea from Nether Stars

Redstone and other valuable materials

Summary

The Supercritical Phase Shifter represents the ultimate endgame goal in Mekanism. While it requires significant resources and time investment to construct, the actual assembly process is straightforward once you understand the block placement pattern. The machine is resource-intensive, requiring constant power input and plutonium/polonium fuel, but unlocks unprecedented capabilities in Mekanism. Whether you’re crafting antimatter pellets for advanced devices or using the Anti-Protonic Nucleosinforcer for transmutation, completing the SPS marks your achievement of Mekanism’s highest tier content.
