Living Things Mod – All Mobs Explained

Living Things Mod: Every Mob Explained

The Living Things mod adds a huge variety of new animals, neutral creatures, and hostile mobs to Minecraft — from elephants roaming the savannah to a miniature Ender Dragon you can tame and ride into battle. In this guide, we’ll walk through every single mob added by the mod: where to find them, what they drop, how to breed them, and any special mechanics you need to know. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned modder, this is your complete reference.

Savannah Mobs

Elephants

Elephants spawn in Savannah biomes. They are defensive — if you attack one, it will fight back. Tamed elephants (tamed using apples) can be equipped with a saddle for riding, and you can also attach a chest to an untamed elephant to give it an inventory. Breed elephants with wheat. When killed, they drop raw elephant meat, leather, and bones.

Giraffes

Also found in Savannah biomes, giraffes are neutral mobs that will only attack if you strike them first. There is a small chance for a giraffe to spawn as an albino giraffe. They drop 1–2 leather on death and are bred using wheat.

Lions

Lions also spawn in Savannah biomes and are aggressive — they will attack you if you get too close. Like giraffes, they have a small chance to spawn as albinos. They drop 1–2 leather and can be bred with beef, rabbit, or chicken.

Ostriches

Ostriches cannot fly but are very fast runners. When two ostriches breed, one of them will run to the nearest sand block to build a nest and lay an egg. You can right-click an ostrich to mount and ride it, and shift to dismount. They drop 1 raw ostrich meat (which can be cooked) and 1–2 feathers. Breed them with wheat. Ostriches are also fans of Savannah biomes.

Peacocks

Peacocks spawn in Savannah and bamboo areas. They are passive but will actively seek out and destroy nearby crops, so keep them away from your farm. They drop 1–5 feathers and can be bred with wheat. Their fan display is purely cosmetic — they will randomly open and close their tail feathers.

Forest and Plains Mobs

Raccoons

Raccoons are defensive neutral mobs that will retaliate if attacked. They spawn in dark forests, flower forests, birch forests, and plains biomes. They drop a small amount of leather on death and can be bred with wheat, apples, beetroots, potatoes, or carrots.

Owls

Owls come in three color variants: white, black, and brown. They spawn in nearly all forest biomes and drop feathers when killed. To tame an owl, use wheat seeds. Once tamed, they will follow you around. Tamed owls can be bred using melon seeds, pumpkin seeds, or beetroot seeds.

Monkeys

Monkeys wander peacefully in jungle biomes but will fight back if attacked. When tamed, they follow you around. Both taming and breeding use apples or bananas. Monkeys are actually your primary source of bananas in the mod, as they drop one banana along with a small amount of leather on death.

Koalas

Koalas are passive mobs that wander and can climb walls and trees, which means they can — and will — escape enclosures. They drop leather and spawn primarily in bamboo jungle hills and similar biomes, as well as Savannah plateaus. Breed them with wheat.

Snowy Biome Mobs

Penguins

Penguins are found in snowy biomes, tundra, and taiga biomes. They are skittish and will run away from polar bears. When killed, they drop 1 cod and 1 salmon (never both at the same time). You can breed penguins with salmon, cod, or pufferfish.

Ocean and Water Mobs

Sharks

Sharks are hostile ocean mobs that spawn in all vanilla ocean biomes. They will actively hunt you down if you get anywhere near them. On death they drop shark teeth and cod. Shark teeth have a crafting use — they can be used to craft arrows and bone meal.

Mantas

Mantas cannot be bred, but they drop cod when killed. They spawn in basically all vanilla ocean biomes, glide gracefully through the water, and often travel in groups. They come in two different colors and four different sizes.

Crabs

Crabs spawn on beaches, rivers, and desert lakes. They are passive until attacked, at which point they become hostile. When killed, they drop crab meat and a crab shell. Crab meat can be cooked into cooked crab meat, which restores 200 hunger points. Note: the crab shell does not currently appear to have a crafting recipe — this feature may not be fully implemented yet. Breed crabs with cod.

Seahorses

Seahorses are peaceful and come in many different colors. They wander oceans in groups and are found exclusively in oceans, deep oceans, warm oceans, and lukewarm oceans. You can pick them up using a water bucket, similar to how you collect fish in vanilla Minecraft, and then release them wherever you like.

Swamp and River Mobs

Flamingos

Flamingos spawn in rivers, swamps, and swamp hills. They spend most of their time standing on one leg and are entirely passive. They drop pink dye and feathers and can be bred with salmon and cod.

Snails

Snails are passive and spawn in six different types. You can also dye snails any color you like by right-clicking them with a dye, or sneak-right-clicking to apply a different one. They drop slime balls, making them an excellent renewable slime ball farm. Snails are found in plains, swamps, birch forests, rivers, and mushroom fields. Breed them with carrots or apples.

Special and Unique Mobs

Shroomies

Shroomies are small, mushroom-themed creatures that spawn in mushroom fields. When you give a shroomy a mushroom, it will find the nearest valid location and plant it. There is a 50% chance the mushroom is not consumed, and the shroomy can plant another one after a short cooldown. Red shroomies plant red mushrooms and brown shroomies plant brown mushrooms. They drop mushrooms on death.

Mini Ender Dragon

The mini Ender Dragon is a miniature version of the vanilla Ender Dragon. It flies around and shoots dragon breath at nearby entities. Once tamed using chorus fruit, it will follow you and attack nearby hostile mobs on your behalf. To spawn the mini Ender Dragon, place a dragon head on top of a purpur pillar. On death, it drops an ender pearl and occasionally some chorus fruit.

Hostile Mobs

Ancient Blaze (Nether)

The Ancient Blaze cannot be found spawning naturally — it must be summoned. To do so, stack two blocks of glowstone and place a jack-o’-lantern on top. This structure must be built in the Nether (make sure your difficulty is not set to Peaceful). Once summoned, the Ancient Blaze goes through a brief invincible charge-up phase, after which it launches both small and large fireballs in multiple directions. It drops multiple blaze rods and an Ancient Helmet, which grants fire resistance while worn.

Nether Knight

The Nether Knight is a formidable hostile mob that spawns naturally inside Nether Fortresses, making encounters with it more dangerous due to the terrain. It spawns already equipped with both an enchanted axe and an enchanted sword — one in each hand. On death, it drops the enchanted axe, enchanted sword, and some bones.

Summary

The Living Things mod is a fantastic addition to any Minecraft playthrough, filling the world with diverse, well-designed creatures across nearly every biome. From tameable elephants and rideable ostriches to slime-ball-dropping snails and a harrowing Nether Knight, there is genuinely something for every type of player. Keep an eye on crab shell crafting in future mod updates — it looks like that feature isn’t fully implemented yet. Otherwise, use this guide as your go-to reference whenever you need a reminder of where to find a mob, what it drops, or how to breed it. Happy exploring!
