How To Use The Caster’s Gauntlet In Thaumcraft 6

The Caster’s Gauntlet is one of the most powerful tools available in Thaumcraft 6, allowing you to craft and fire magical spells using customised focii. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to get started — from crafting the required items to firing your first Firebolt projectile spell.

What You Need To Get Started

Before you can use the Caster’s Gauntlet, you will need to gather a few essential items. The two most important are a Focal Manipulator and a Blank Lesser Focus. Of course, you will also need the Caster’s Gauntlet itself.

If you are unsure where to find this information in the Thaumonomicon, navigate to the Auramancy section. Inside, look for Basic Auramancy — this is where the Caster’s Gauntlet knowledge is unlocked.

Crafting The Focal Manipulator

The Focal Manipulator is crafted at the Arcane Workbench. You can find the exact recipe inside the Basic Auramancy entry in the Thaumonomicon.

Crafting The Blank Lesser Focus

The Blank Lesser Focus is crafted in your Crucible. Again, the recipe is listed in the Basic Auramancy section of the Thaumonomicon alongside the Focal Manipulator recipe.

Optional But Recommended: The Workbench Charger

It is strongly recommended that you also craft a Workbench Charger. This machine increases the amount of Vis visible from the nine surrounding chunks in your local area, which makes crafting focii much easier and more efficient.

Using The Focal Manipulator

Once you have all your materials ready, open the Focal Manipulator. To begin crafting a focus, open your inventory, take your Blank Lesser Focus, and drag it into the slot in the bottom left of the Focal Manipulator interface.

Once the focus is placed, you will see several options appear. On the right side of the interface you will find three key stats:

Total Complexity — how complex your spell is

Experience Cost — the XP required to craft the focus

Vis Cost — the amount of Vis that will be consumed during crafting

The central area of the interface is where you build your spell by adding components.

Crafting A Projectile Firebolt Spell

As an example, we will create a Projectile Firebolt spell. Here is how to set it up step by step.

Step 1 — Choose Your Delivery Method

First, select Projectile as your delivery type. This means the spell will be fired as a projectile. The alternative is Touch, which only affects targets within 4 blocks — but for this spell, Projectile is the right choice.

Step 2 — Add The Fire Component

Next, add the Fire component. This has a Complexity of 2 and deals 4 Attack Damage. You can click on the Fire component to adjust settings such as Burn Duration and damage power. You can also click on the Projectile component to adjust Projectile Speed. Keep in mind that increasing these values will raise the overall Vis and Experience costs shown at the top of the interface.

Step 3 — Gather The Required Vis Crystals

After configuring your spell, the interface will display which Vis Crystals are required to craft it. For this particular Firebolt spell, you will need Motus and Ignis Vis crystals. Step 4 — Start Crafting

Once you have the Motus and Ignis Vis crystals in your inventory, press the Start Crafting button. The Focal Manipulator will begin crafting your focus. The time this takes depends on how much Vis is available in your local area. Once complete, right-click the Focal Manipulator to retrieve the finished focus and place it in your inventory.

Equipping And Using The Caster’s Gauntlet

With your crafted focus in your inventory, it is time to load it into your Caster’s Gauntlet. Press F on your keyboard while the Gauntlet is equipped. This will open a selection menu showing all the focii you currently have in your inventory.

Click on your newly crafted Firebolt focus to insert it into the Gauntlet. You will see the focus slot on the Gauntlet update to reflect the equipped focus.

To fire the spell, simply right-click. In the top left of your screen, you will notice a small bar — this represents how much Vis is currently available in the chunk you are standing in. Each time you fire, Vis is consumed from this pool. Right-click to fire the Firebolt at your target.

Unlocking More Gauntlet Options

As you progress through the Thaumonomicon quests in the Auramancy section, you will unlock additional components and upgrades for your Caster’s Gauntlet. Here are a few worth knowing about:

Focus Pouch — Allows you to store multiple focii, perfect if you like swapping between different spells.

Vis Amulet — Helps recharge any Vis-powered gear you are wearing.

Workbench Charger — Already covered above, but well worth crafting early.

Advanced Caster’s Gauntlets — Higher-tier Gauntlets that support more powerful and complex spells.
