How To Open Void Rifts (Flux Rifts) in Thaumcraft 6

Want to intentionally open a void rift or flux rift in Thaumcraft 6? Whether you’re early game and working with a Crucible, or further along and dealing with Void Seeds, this guide covers both methods step by step. Follow along and you’ll have a rift forming in no time.

Method 1: Opening a Rift Using a Crucible (Early Game)

The easiest early-game method is to overload your Crucible with as much rubbish (junk items) as possible. As you dump items in, you’ll notice the Crucible becoming darker and darker purple. Keep going until it’s bubbling over — this is exactly what you want.

You can do this with just one Crucible or several — the choice is yours. You can even throw in entire stacks of items at once to speed up the process. Once the Crucible is overflowing, you’ll begin to see purple clouds of flux and warp rising up into the atmosphere.

How Long Does It Take?

After the flux clouds start rising, a rift may take anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes to open. It won’t necessarily happen instantly. The best approach is to dump in as many items as you can, then step away and come back after about 10 minutes — you’ll very likely find a rift has formed.

Method 2: Opening a Rift Using Void Seeds (Later Game)

A more deliberate method of opening rifts involves using Void Seeds. It’s important to know that Void Seeds are obtained by closing flux rifts using a Causality Collapse. This means you’ll need to have closed at least one rift first before you can use this method. Crafting a Flux Seed in the Thaumatorium

Once you have a Void Seed, head to your Thaumatorium (or use your Crucible — both work the same way). Place the Void Seed inside and select the Flux Seed recipe. This recipe requires 50 Vitium to complete.

If you need Vitium, you can generate some manually. There are also automated setups available for producing Vitium efficiently — a separate tutorial covering that automation is available on the Thaumcraft playlist. Once the Thaumatorium has enough Vitium, it will produce a Flux Seed.

Using the Flux Seed to Spawn a Rift

With your Flux Seed in hand, simply place it in the world. The Flux Seed works by continuously releasing flux into the atmosphere. This is essentially the same process as overloading a Crucible, just done manually and in a more controlled way. The flux builds up over time in the atmosphere, and eventually a rift will form.

Keep in mind that you’ll likely need to place and use quite a few Flux Seeds to accumulate enough flux for a rift to open. This makes it a better option for later-game players who have already gathered a supply of Void Seeds from closing previous rifts.
