How to Make Spells in Roots Classic

How to Make Spells in Roots Classic

Spells are one of the core features of the Roots Classic mod for Minecraft. In this guide, you’ll learn exactly how to craft spell powders using a mortar and pestle, how to use base modifiers and ingredient modifiers to enhance your spells, and how to imbue a staff so you can cast spells in-game. Whether you’re aiming for powerful healing or area-of-effect growth magic, this step-by-step walkthrough has you covered.

What You Need to Get Started

To begin crafting spells in Roots Classic, you will need two essential items: a Pestle and a Mortar. The mortar can be crafted from any type of stone. Once you have both, place the mortar down on the ground — this is where all your spell crafting will take place.

Finding Spells in the Runic Tablet

Open your Runic Tablet to browse all available spells. Each spell entry shows you what it does and which ingredients are required to craft it. Take your time reading through them — there are many options to explore.

Example Spells

Here are a few examples of spells you can find in the Runic Tablet:

Grove — Requires Lilac, Wheat, Beetroot, and Vines. Creates a spell capable of growing nearby plant life. It targets a grove or plants around the target block and has a chance of applying a bone meal effect to each one.

Inferno — Causes fire and damages enemies it hits.

Regeneration — Requires Peony, Melon, Red Dye, and Nightshade. This is the example spell used throughout this guide.

All spells ultimately produce Spell Powder, but the specific ingredients you use determine which spell powder you get. For example, using the Regeneration ingredients will produce Spell Powder of Regeneration.

Understanding Modifiers

Before you craft your spell, it is strongly recommended that you use modifiers. There are three types of modifiers, each with a different effect:

Potency (Glowstone Dust) — Increases how powerful the spell is. For example, adding Glowstone Dust to a Regeneration spell means it will heal you for more.

Efficiency (Redstone Dust) — Improves the casting cost and increases the number of uses a spell has when imbued onto a staff.

Size (Gunpowder) — Increases the area of effect. For instance, the Grove spell will affect a larger area of crops around the target block.

Understanding Base Modifiers

A base modifier determines how many ingredient modifiers (Glowstone Dust, Redstone Dust, or Gunpowder) you are allowed to add to your spell. There are four base modifiers available:

Old Root — No modifier slots. The spell will work but will not be enhanced.

Verdant Sprig — Adds 1 modifier slot.

Infernal Bulb — Adds 2 modifier slots.

Dragon’s Eye — Adds 3 modifier slots.

For example, if you use a Dragon’s Eye, you can add up to three modifiers — such as three Glowstone Dust for maximum potency, or a mix of Glowstone and Redstone for potency and extra uses.

How to Craft a Spell Powder – Step by Step

Follow these steps in order when placing items into your Mortar:

Add your base modifier first. Choose from Old Root (no modifiers), Verdant Sprig (1 slot), Infernal Bulb (2 slots), or Dragon’s Eye (3 slots).

Add your modifier ingredients. Add Glowstone Dust, Redstone Dust, or Gunpowder — up to the number of slots your base modifier allows.

Add your spell ingredients. These are the specific items listed in the Runic Tablet for the spell you want to craft.

Use your Pestle. Once all ingredients are in the mortar, use the Pestle to grind them together and produce your Spell Powder.

Worked Example: Spell Powder of Regeneration +3 Potency

To craft a highly potent Regeneration spell, place the following into your mortar in order:

1x Dragon’s Eye (base modifier — allows 3 modifier slots)

3x Glowstone Dust (potency modifier — filling all 3 slots)

1x Red Dye, 1x Melon, 1x Nightshade (Regeneration spell ingredients)

Then use your Pestle. The result will be Spell Powder of Regeneration +3 Potency.

Imbuing Your Spell Powder onto a Staff

Once you have your Spell Powder, you need to craft an Imbuer and place it down in the world. Put your Spell Powder into the Imbuer, then place a plain stick into it as well. After a few seconds, the stick will be imbued and pop out as a fully crafted staff — for example, a Staff of Regeneration.

Using Your Staff in the Game

To cast a spell with your staff, simply hold right-click and then release. You will see a visual effect — for the Regeneration spell, green leaves appear as the spell charges. This visual effect acts as your mana bar in Roots Classic.

A staff crafted with 3x Glowstone Dust (3 potency) will heal you for a significant amount. If you had instead used 3x Redstone Dust, you would receive far more uses remaining on the staff — as shown on the staff item tooltip, which displays the remaining use count.

Quick Reference Summary

Here’s a quick recap of everything covered in this guide:

Craft a Mortar (any stone) and a Pestle to begin.

Use your Runic Tablet to find spell ingredients.

Choose a base modifier: Old Root (0), Verdant Sprig (1), Infernal Bulb (2), Dragon’s Eye (3).

Add Glowstone Dust for potency, Redstone Dust for more uses, Gunpowder for larger area of effect.

Add your spell ingredients last, then use the Pestle.

Place Spell Powder and a stick into an Imbuer to create a staff.

Cast your spell by holding and releasing right-click with the staff equipped.

Roots Classic offers a wide variety of spells to experiment with, and mastering the modifier system lets you tailor each spell to your playstyle. Start with Regeneration to get familiar with the process, then branch out into offensive and utility spells as you gather more ingredients.
