Industrial Craft 2 (IC2) offers several accessible methods for generating power early in your modded Minecraft journey. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to expand your power infrastructure, this guide covers the three simplest and most effective early-game power generation options available in IC2.
The Generator: Coal-Powered Simplicity
The generator is the most straightforward power generation machine in IC2. To use it, simply place blocks of coal (or other combustible fuel) into the machine. As the fuel burns, you’ll see EU (Energy Units) — the currency of energy in Industrial Craft 2 — accumulating in the buffer.
This is the simplest machine available for power generation and serves as an excellent starting point for new players. The process is intuitive: add fuel, watch the EU counter rise, and connect your cables to use the power.

Solar Panels: Renewable but Requiring Scale
Solar panels are the second early-game option, and they operate on an obvious principle: they generate power from sunlight. Simply place a solar panel in direct sunlight, and it will begin generating EU automatically.
Each solar panel generates 10 EU per tick, and they are fully renewable — you’ll never run out of sunlight. However, it’s important to understand that individual solar panels produce very little power. For solar energy to be practical, you need to deploy them in large batches. A single panel won’t contribute much to your power infrastructure, but dozens or hundreds working together can be quite effective.

Geothermal Generator: High-Output Lava Power
The geothermal generator is the most powerful early-game option, generating 20 EU per tick. Despite its more complex appearance, it’s actually quite simple to operate.
To use a geothermal generator, place lava or lava buckets into the top input slot. The machine will consume the lava and leave you with an empty bucket in the bottom output slot. A single lava bucket generates over 2,400 EU total — a significant amount for early-game power needs.
For convenience, you can pump lava directly into the geothermal generator using fluid pipes rather than manually inserting buckets, making this method scalable as your base grows.

Connecting and Storing Your Power
Once you’ve set up your power generation, you’ll need to transport and store the energy. Use tin cables to pipe EU from your generators to where it’s needed throughout your base.
To store the power you’re generating, craft and place a BatBox. This energy storage unit can accept input on any side you choose, and outputs power through the designated white hole. BatBoxes are essential for buffering power generation and ensuring a steady supply during peak demand times.
