How to Get Flint in Gregtech New Horizons

Flint is one of the most essential early-game resources in Gregtech New Horizons, and you’ll need a significant amount to progress. This guide walks you through all the methods available to obtain Flint, from basic crafting to using specialized machines.

Finding Gravel

The first step in getting Flint is locating gravel. Gravel spawns naturally around rivers and bodies of water, making it relatively easy to find. We recommend gathering a large quantity of gravel early on, as you’ll need substantial amounts in the early game of Gregtech New Horizons.

Once you’ve collected gravel, head to your crafting table (or use your personal crafting grid) to begin the conversion process.

Basic Crafting: Gravel to Flint

The simplest method to convert gravel into Flint is through crafting. Place gravel in your crafting table in an L-shape pattern. This recipe produces one Flint per three gravel blocks, making it a 3:1 ratio. While straightforward, this method requires a large amount of gravel to yield meaningful quantities of Flint.

Using a Mortar: Improved Efficiency

As soon as you can craft a mortar, your Flint production becomes significantly more efficient. To craft a mortar, you’ll need:

You can easily obtain stone by smelting cobblestone in a furnace. Once you have a mortar, the conversion ratio improves dramatically: one gravel now equals one Flint. Although you’ll need to spend a small amount of Flint upfront to craft the mortar, the 1:1 ratio is far more efficient than the 3:1 crafting recipe.

The Sifter: Best Early-Game Option

At low voltage, you can craft a sifter, which offers the best conversion rates available. The sifter processes one gravel into one guaranteed Flint, but also grants additional chances for more:

90% chance to get a second Flint

80% chance to get a third Flint

Diminishing chances for even more Flint (up to a theoretical maximum of six Flint from a single gravel)

This makes the sifter an excellent investment for early-game Flint production, as it can yield significantly more output than the mortar method while requiring the same input.
