What is a Coke Oven?

The Coke oven is a multiblock structure in GregTech that functions similarly to the primitive blast furnace. It requires actual Coke oven bricks to construct and serves as a crucial component for progressing through the mod. If you’re familiar with Immersive Engineering, you’ll recognize the mechanics as very similar.

The primary purpose of the Coke oven is to process coal into Coke and produce Creosote, a highly useful byproduct that has multiple applications throughout the mod.

Materials You’ll Need

Coke Oven Bricks

The foundation of your Coke oven is Coke oven bricks, which are made from compressed Coke clay. You can create these very easily using a brick wooden form—simply use a knife and saw to process the clay into bricks.

Additional Components

Beyond the bricks themselves, you’ll need the actual Coke oven block (the control block for the structure). You may also want to gather Coke oven hatches, which serve as inputs and outputs for items and fluids.

Building the Coke Oven Structure

The key difference between a Coke oven and a primitive blast furnace is that the Coke oven has an empty interior—it’s essentially a hollow shell rather than an open-topped structure.

To build your Coke oven:

Create a 3×3 footprint using Coke oven bricks

Fill in only the outer layer of bricks (creating the hollow shell)

Replace one brick with the Coke oven block itself

When properly constructed, the structure will display “structure formed”

Operating the Coke Oven

Once your Coke oven is assembled, operation is straightforward. Simply input coal into the structure, and it will process the coal into Coke while simultaneously producing Creosote as a byproduct.

To collect the Coke output, access the interior and remove it directly. You can collect the Creosote fluid in a bucket by left-clicking it onto the Creosote liquid.

Using Coke Oven Hatches

For a more automated setup, you can attach Coke oven hatches to your structure. These hatches function as inputs and outputs, allowing you to extract both fluids and items without having to access the interior manually. This is especially useful when scaling up your operation.

Applications of Creosote

Treated Wood Planks

The primary use for Creosote in GregTech is crafting treated wood planks. These planks are then used to create treated wood sticks and other treated wood derivatives. Treated wood is essential for several advanced crafting recipes throughout the mod.

Torch Crafting

An interesting side use: you can combine sticks with walls and Creosote to create torches—yielding 12 torches per crafting recipe.

Primitive Pump Construction

One of the most important applications of treated wood is building the primitive pump, a machine that allows you to pump endless amounts of water in GregTech. This is critical for many progression paths in the mod.
