Primitive Pump Tutorial – Gregtech CEu Modern
Primitive Pump Tutorial – Gregtech CEu Modern
Before progressing to low voltage machinery in Gregtech CEu Modern, setting up water sources is essential. The primitive pump is a multi-block structure that may look complex at first, but this guide will walk you through every step of building and operating one successfully.
What You’ll Need
To construct a primitive pump, you’ll need the following components:
1 Primitive Pump block
Pump Decks
10 Treated Wood Frames
1 Pump Hatch (where water outputs)
Bronze fluid pipes
By this point in your progression, you should be comfortable using your screwdriver, file, hammer, and crafting plates, screws, and rings manually.
Building the Structure
Dimensions and Layout
The primitive pump structure is a 3×3×4 multi-block. Start by clearing out an appropriate work area where you want to place it.

Placing the Blocks
Begin by placing down the pump decks as the base layer. Position the Primitive Pump block at the front of the structure.

Surround the pump decks and primitive pump with an area for water. While you may only need water directly where the primitive pump block sits, surrounding it ensures optimal functionality.

Next, place your 10 Treated Wood Frames around the structure. These frames are made from Creosote, which you can obtain from the Coke oven. An added benefit: treated wood frames function as climbable ladders, making access to your pump easier.

Installing the Pump Hatch
The pump hatch is the critical output point where water emerges from your pump. Place it in the middle section where the pipe will exit the structure.

Simply place the pump hatch in its designated location, and it’s ready to function.

Connecting and Operating the Pump
Water Activation
The primitive pump only requires water to be present where the actual primitive pump block is located. Once water is added to this area, the pump automatically begins functioning.

You’ll see the pump hatch fill with water, confirming the pump is active and ready to output.

Connecting Fluid Pipes
Take a bronze fluid pipe and shift-click it onto the pump hatch. The pipe will connect automatically, and the pump will begin outputting water immediately through the fluid network.

Congratulations—you now have an unlimited water source from Gregtech CEu Modern!

Setting Up a Complete Water-to-Steam System
Here’s a practical example of how to use your primitive pump for steam generation:
Connect the primitive pump output to a bronze drum using bronze fluid pipes
Use a screwdriver on the bottom of the bronze drum to enable automatic water output
Route the water through additional tubes into pressure steam boilers
Upgrade your steam boilers to steel versions for improved efficiency

Additional Storage Options
While setting up your water system, consider using bronze crates or wooden crates for storing items. You can also use barrels or double barrels for additional fluid and item storage capacity.

Summary
The primitive pump is an essential early-game multi-block structure in Gregtech CEu Modern that provides unlimited water for steam generation and other processes. By following this guide, you’ve learned how to construct the 3×3×4 structure, connect fluid pipes, and integrate it into a larger water-to-steam system. With this foundation in place, you’re ready to progress toward low voltage machinery and beyond.
