How to Make Coal Coke & Creosote using the Coke Oven – Immersive Engineering
Coal coke and creosote oil are essential early-game resources in Immersive Engineering. They’re used to craft treated wood and many other crucial materials. The coke oven is the multiblock structure you’ll need to produce both of these valuable resources. This guide walks you through building and operating the coke oven to get you started on your Immersive Engineering journey.
Understanding the Coke Oven
The coke oven is a manual but straightforward device that converts coal into coal coke while producing creosote oil as a byproduct. When you place coal into the coke oven, it will cook over time. If you’re using a mod like JEI (Just Enough Items) or similar, you can see the progress of the cooking process. The operation is simple: insert coal and wait for the conversion to complete.
Building the Coke Oven
Required Materials
To construct a coke oven, you’ll need the following materials:
Coke bricks
Clay balls
Bricks
Sandstone
Construction Steps
The coke oven is built as a 3x3x3 multiblock structure. Here’s how to assemble it:
Layer the coke bricks in a repeating pattern: one, two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three for each layer. Note that in Minecraft version 1.20, the center of the structure is completely solid, though in earlier versions it may have been hollow. Check your specific version’s requirements if you’re playing on a different update.

Once you’ve placed all the coke bricks in the correct formation, you’ll need an Engineer’s Hammer. Right-click on the center block of the multiblock with the hammer, and the structure will transform into a functioning coke oven.

Operating the Coke Oven
Input and Output Indicators
Immersive Engineering uses a consistent visual system across all its machines. Look for a small blue circle on the coke oven—this indicates the input slot. The orange circle indicates the output slot. This color-coding system remains the same throughout the entire mod, making it easy to identify inputs and outputs on any machine.

Processing Coal
Place coal into the input slot, and the coke oven will begin processing. One piece of coal will produce one piece of coal coke along with approximately half a bucket of creosote oil.

You can extract the creosote oil by placing a bucket into the output slot. The process takes some time, but it’s a reliable way to generate these essential materials.
Alternative Inputs
The coke oven accepts more than just individual coal pieces. You can also process blocks of coal, though this takes significantly longer to cook. When you do process a block of coal, you’ll receive a block of coal coke in return.

Additionally, you can use logs in the coke oven to produce charcoal along with a small amount of creosote oil. However, keep in mind that charcoal cannot be used to create coal coke—only logs and coal can produce coal coke. That said, charcoal will still generate creosote as a byproduct if you choose to process it.

Summary
The coke oven is a fundamental machine in Immersive Engineering for producing coal coke and creosote oil. Build it using coke bricks in a 3x3x3 multiblock pattern, activate it with an Engineer’s Hammer, and then feed it coal, coal blocks, or logs. Watch for the blue (input) and orange (output) indicators to understand how to load and unload materials. With this early-game infrastructure in place, you’ll have a steady supply of coal coke and creosote oil for all your treated wood and other advanced crafting needs.
