Getting Started: The Casting Altar and Braziers

Before you can perform any ritual, you need two key components: a casting altar and braziers. The casting altar is crafted using verdant sprigs and a few other basic materials. Once placed, it acts as the central workstation for all your rituals.

Braziers are used to burn incense during rituals. Different rituals require different items to be burned inside the braziers. To activate a brazier, simply right-click it with a flint and steel to light it.

To browse available rituals, open your Runic Tablet, navigate to the Spells tab, and click the right arrow to reach the Rituals section. Here you’ll find every ritual available in Roots Classic, complete with ingredient lists and instructions.

Your First Ritual: Crafting Living Tools

A great first ritual to try is crafting Living Tools. These are special tools that slowly regenerate their own durability over time — incredibly useful for any playthrough. As an example, we’ll walk through crafting a Living Pickaxe.

For now, ignore the large grid below — that section is for standing stones, which are used in more advanced rituals.

Place the three altar ingredients — the wooden pickaxe, verdant sprig, and gold nugget — onto the casting altar by right-clicking each item onto it, one at a time.

Next, right-click your two pieces of arc oak bark into the brazier. After each one, you should see a message confirming “Item added.” Even if you can’t see the items visually sitting in the brazier, that message confirms they’re there.

Now light the brazier by right-clicking it with a flint and steel. Once it’s burning, use an empty hand to shift right-click the casting altar in the center. If everything has been added correctly, the ritual will begin and your Living Pickaxe will pop out shortly after.

Fixing a Wrong Brazier Item

Made a mistake and added the wrong item to the brazier? No problem. Simply shift right-click the brazier while it’s burning and it will stop. This lets you remove the incorrect item and replace it with the right one before restarting the ritual.

Advanced Rituals: Standing Stones

More advanced rituals — like crafting the crystal staff — require you to lay out standing stones around your casting altar. These are placed in a specific pattern shown in the Runic Tablet recipe grid. There are several tiers of standing stones to be aware of:

Crafting the Crystal Staff

The Crystal Staff is one of the most powerful items in Roots Classic. It has unlimited uses and can store up to four spells at a time, letting you switch between them on the fly.

Crafting the Staff

The crystal staff recipe requires both altar ingredients and standing stones to be placed, just like the advanced ritual layout described above. Place the required items on the altar, set up your standing stones in the correct pattern, add the four required items to your braziers, light them, and then shift right-click the altar to begin the ritual.

Adding Spells to the Crystal Staff

Once you have your crystal staff, you can load it with spells using another ritual. Here’s how:

Place your Crystal Staff on the casting altar.

Place a Verdant Sprig alongside it on the altar.

Right-click the spells you want to add into the braziers (up to four spells).

Light the braziers with your flint and steel.

Shift right-click the altar to complete the ritual and embed the spells into the staff.

In the example shown, a Rose’s Forms spell and a Regeneration spell are added to the staff simultaneously.

Overwriting Spells

Want to change the spells stored in your staff? Simply repeat the spell-adding ritual with the new spells in the braziers. The new spells will overwrite the old ones. Remember, the staff holds a maximum of four spells.

Switching Between Spells

While holding the crystal staff, use Shift + Right-Click to cycle through the spells stored inside it. Each spell is represented by a different color, so you’ll want to familiarize yourself with which color corresponds to which spell.

Important: Standing on Natural Ground

There is one important limitation to the crystal staff: to draw on its full power without penalty, you must be standing on a natural block such as dirt or grass. If you’re standing on stone, wood, or other non-natural surfaces, the staff will drain your life force instead of drawing from natural energy. Despite this, the staff still has unlimited uses — just be mindful of where you’re standing.

Ritual Armor: Wildwood and Sylvan Inherited

Roots Classic also includes two sets of ritual-crafted armor worth knowing about. Both relate to your Terra bar — the green mana bar you’ll see when using spells in Roots Classic.

Wildwood Armor

Wildwood armor offers increased Terra regeneration, meaning your mana bar refills significantly faster after casting spells. It also provides standard armor and armor toughness bonuses.

Sylvan Inherited Armor

Sylvan Inherited armor also features increased Terra regeneration, but adds +1 Potency as well. This means your spells will actually deal more damage or have a stronger effect — equivalent to adding Glowstone to a spell manually.

The Engraved Blade: A Customizable Ritual Weapon

The Engraved Blade is a special sword that uses the properties of a Ruinant Focus — an item that can store magical energy. You craft the base sword via ritual, and then you can burn up to four different types of bark as additional incense in the braziers during crafting to add unique buffs to the blade. These can be mixed and matched.

Any Bark (generic) — Adds base damage to the sword.
