Into The Backrooms ModPack: Complete Guide to All Levels & How to Escape

Welcome to your complete guide for playing the horror Into The Backrooms ModPack in Minecraft. This guide covers everything you need to know to navigate through all levels and successfully escape the Backrooms. Whether you’re playing solo or with friends, follow these instructions to master this procedurally-generated horror experience.

Getting Started: Entering the Backrooms

To begin your journey into the Backrooms, you’ll need to perform a suffocation ritual using sand or gravel. The first step is to gather some sand or gravel from the surface world.

Before you attempt to enter the Backrooms, make sure you are at full hunger. This is critical for survival. Additionally, note that any armor you are currently wearing will not come with you into the Backrooms, so don’t waste resources on gear.

Place the sand on top of your head to suffocate yourself. Unlike normal Minecraft suffocation, you will not die. Instead, you’ll experience a strange third-person first-person hybrid view and be transported into the Backrooms.

Once you’ve entered the Backrooms, you’ll see a tutorial video. At this point, you’re ready to begin exploring.

Essential Equipment: Your Flashlight

Your most important tool in the Backrooms is your flashlight. Press the F key to activate it (F is the keybind for the Fox Drop flashlight). The flashlight has unlimited battery and will be essential for navigating the dark corridors ahead.

Level 0: The Main Backrooms (Procedurally Generated)

Level 0 is the entry level of the Backrooms and is procedurally generated, meaning the layout will be different each time you play. This level contains only one monster that can appear, but only in multiplayer games.

The Skin Walker Threat

In multiplayer mode, a mob called a Skin Walker can appear on this level. The Skin Walker works by taking over a player’s body and using their microphone to trick other players into thinking they’re still a real person. After being attacked or after some time, the entity will emerge from the player’s body and begin attacking others. After further time, it will return to the player’s body.

If a player is infected by a Skin Walker, you can type release [username] in chat to free them from the entity’s control. If you’re playing solo, this threat will not appear.

Finding the Exit

Your goal on Level 0 is to find a staircase that will take you to the next level. Since this level is procedurally generated, finding the staircase may take some time—it’s largely based on luck. Keep exploring and listen for the eerie sounds that characterize the Backrooms atmosphere.

Eventually, you’ll come across a staircase. This is your exit to Level 1.

Level 1: The Habitable Zone (Parking Garage)

After descending the staircase from Level 0, you’ll be transported to a completely different dimension called Level 1: The Habitable Zone. This level is designed as a parking garage.

Finding Food and Supplies

When you enter the garage, you’ll notice crates scattered throughout. Right-click on these crates to open them and search for food. You may find mushrooms or other edible items. This is one of the few levels that contains food, so take advantage of it before moving on.

The Smilers

In this level, you’ll encounter creatures called Smilers. These entities are extremely creepy but manageable. If you shine your flashlight at them while standing relatively close, they will disappear. This makes your flashlight an effective defense tool.

Two Paths Forward

The parking garage has two exits: an upstairs path and a downstairs path. Each leads to a completely different route through the Backrooms. Your choice here determines which levels you’ll encounter next.

Downstairs Path: This leads to the Pipe Level

Upstairs Path: This leads to the Gas Station

We’ll explore both routes below.

Route 1: The Downstairs Path

The Pipe Level (Optical Illusion Area)

If you go downstairs from the parking garage, you’ll enter a strange pipe level filled with optical illusions. The visuals are intentionally disorienting and bizarre.

Your objective on this level is simple: keep running. Continue forward through the twisted pipes and passages. As you progress, your screen will begin to glitch out, signaling your transition to the next level.

Energy Bar Management

You’ll notice an energy bar in the middle of your screen. This bar limits how long you can sprint. You cannot sprint forever, so manage your sprinting carefully and allow time for your energy to regenerate.

Level 37: The Pole Level

After the screen glitching effect completes, you’ll arrive at Level 37, known as the Pole Level. This is the iconic level from the original Backrooms lore, featuring massive poles stretching from floor to ceiling.

Your goal here is to locate a huge open room. Once you find it, sprint up the staircase that winds around the entire room. At the top, you’ll see a hole in the wall.

The Water Passage

Beyond the hole in the wall, there is water that will damage you slightly, but you should survive without difficulty if you have adequate health. Continue through this water.

After passing through the water, you’ll drop down to the next level.

Level 10: The Infinite Grass Level (Final Level)

You’ve now reached Level 10, the Infinite Grass Level, which is the final level of the Backrooms. This level features endless grass and open sky.

Finding the Escape Structure

To escape the Backrooms completely, you need to find a massive structure somewhere in the grass level. This structure is your key to freedom.

Enter the structure and locate the staircase inside. Go up the staircase.

Following these stairs will take you completely out of the Backrooms and return you to the surface world where you started.

Route 2: The Upstairs Path

Returning to the Parking Garage for the Alternate Route

If you prefer to explore the alternate route, return to the parking garage Level 1 and take the upstairs path instead of going downstairs.

The Gas Station Level

Going upstairs from the parking garage takes you to a gas station. This is a completely different level from the pipe and pole levels you’d encounter on the downstairs route.

The Dangerous Back Room

Inside the gas station, you’ll notice a door at the back. Do not enter this door. If you do, your screen will glitch, and you’ll be taken to a dark area with scattered lights. This area is inescapable, so back out immediately if you accidentally enter.

If you do go through this door, exit back into the gas station. Your screen will glitch again as you return.

The Grass Escape Route

Instead of going through the back door, exit the gas station through the front door. Outside, you’ll find grass that resembles a scene from a Resident Evil game.

Sprint along the grass on either the left or right side of the gas station. It doesn’t matter which direction you choose. Keep running, and you’ll eventually drop down to the Infinite Grass Level (Level 10).

From there, follow the same escape procedure: find the massive structure, enter it, go up the stairs, and escape the Backrooms.

Summary: Two Paths to Freedom

Downstairs Route: Parking Garage → Pipe Level → Level 37 (Pole Level) → Level 10 (Grass Level) → Escape

Upstairs Route: Parking Garage → Gas Station → Level 10 (Grass Level) → Escape

Both routes eventually lead to Level 10, where you can find the structure that allows you to escape the Backrooms entirely. Your journey through this procedurally-generated horror ModPack will be unique, but these guidelines will help you navigate any configuration of the levels.

Final Thoughts

The Into The Backrooms ModPack for Minecraft offers a thrilling and atmospheric horror experience. Remember to keep your flashlight active, manage your energy bar, and always look for staircases or major structures as your way forward. Good luck escaping the Backrooms!
