The Ultimate Guide to Evilcraft

The Ultimate Guide to EvilCraft Mod for Minecraft

EvilCraft is one of Minecraft’s most unique and flavourful magic mods — blending dark gems, blood manipulation, sinister mobs, and powerful machines into a rich progression system. Whether you’re brand new to the mod or just need a structured walkthrough, this guide will take you from your very first dark gem all the way to crafting Garmon Bozia, the mod’s final ingredient. Let’s dive in.

Getting Started: Dark Gems and the Origins of Darkness

Mining Dark Ore

The very first thing you need to do in EvilCraft is find Dark Ore or Deep Slate Dark Ore — either variant works. You only need an iron pickaxe to mine both. However, it is strongly recommended that you get Fortune on your pickaxe before you start mining.

When you mine Dark Ore with Fortune, you will receive two items: Dark Gems and Crushed Dark Gems. Without Fortune, you will only receive Dark Gems. Crushed Dark Gems are important throughout the mod and cannot generally be obtained from crushing machines unless your modpack has specifically changed the recipe. Fortune is the only reliable way to get them. You can typically find Dark Ore at around the same Y-levels as Redstone.

Crafting a Dark Apple

Once you have your Dark Gems, grab an apple and combine it in your inventory with a Dark Gem to create a Dark Apple. Do not eat this yourself — it will deal significant damage. Instead, you are going to feed it to a mob.

Obtaining the Origins of Darkness Book

To get the all-important guide book for EvilCraft, called the Origins of Darkness, you will also need a regular Book in your inventory. Feed the Dark Apple to a pig. The pig will begin acting strangely and eventually die, creating a Spirit Portal — a glowing anomaly on the ground. Immediately throw your book into the Spirit Portal.

What you get back is the Origins of Darkness book. The book is divided into two main chapters: the First Age and the Second Age, which represent the two main phases of EvilCraft progression. Keep it handy — but of course, this guide has you covered.

The Dark Temple and the Environmental Accumulator

Finding a Dark Temple

Your next landmark goal is to find a Dark Temple. These are fairly common structures found across many biomes, so you should encounter one without too much trouble. Climb to the top of the temple and you will find a structure in the centre called an Environmental Accumulator.

Weather Containers

To use the Environmental Accumulator, you first need to craft a Weather Container. Combine Dark Gems, a glass bottle, and some sugar to make one. When you throw the Weather Container into the Environmental Accumulator, it will absorb the current local weather. There is a charge bar at the top of your screen — you must wait for it to fully charge before using the accumulator again.

Here are the three weather types you can capture:

My Only Sunshine — captured during clear weather

When the Rain Begins to Fall — captured during rain

Thunder Struck — captured during a thunderstorm

You can also craft these by combining weather containers with each other in specific recipes. For example, combining My Only Sunshine with two buckets of water creates When the Rain Begins to Fall.

Useful Weather Container Recipes

Three Dark Gems + a rain weather container = Eternal Water Bucket (infinite water source)

A Dark Block (nine Dark Gems) + a rain weather container = Eternal Water Block (infinite water source)

Glowstone + a weather container = the Thunder Struck version

Eight Ender Pearls around a Thunder Struck container = Lightning Grenades

Lightning Grenades are extremely useful. Throw one and lightning will strike exactly where it lands. This makes them a great early-game tool for any situation where you need to trigger a lightning strike — a mechanic used in several other mods as well.

Biome Extract Bottles

Beyond weather, you can also capture the biome you are standing in. Craft a Biome Extract Bottle using glass, a Crushed Dark Gem, and a Dark Gem — this gives you three bottles. Throw one into the Environmental Accumulator and it will slowly charge with the local biome data.

Be aware: each Environmental Accumulator can only store a biome cleanly once. The first time you capture a biome and throw the bottle, it will convert nearby land into that biome (e.g. a Taiga). If the accumulator has already been used, the biome data will be degraded, and throwing it will instead create a dark, corrupted evil biome. Use a fresh accumulator to get a clean biome result.

EvilCraft Mobs

Poisonous Libella (Dragonfly)

EvilCraft adds a small mob called the Poisonous Libella — meaning “dragonfly” in Dutch. During the daytime, these appear as cute, harmless dragonflies. At night, however, they become aggressive and dangerous. When killed, they drop Poison Sacks.

Here is what you can make with Poison Sacks:

Four Poison Sacks + a Bucket = Poison Bucket

Poison Bucket = used to craft a Poison Potato or Potion of Poison

Poison Bucket = used to craft a Poison Tip enchanted book (applies poison to weapons)

Werewolves

Werewolves are a more dangerous mob added by EvilCraft. They appear at night and in dark or evil biomes. Killing a werewolf can drop three items:

Werewolf Bone — converts to 15 Bone Meal

Werewolf Fur — converts to Leather (5 pieces) in a crafting table

Werewolf Flesh — combined with Garmon Bozia later in the game to make Rejuvenated Flesh, which can be topped up with blood for an infinite food source

During the daytime, werewolves revert into Villagers. In villager form, they may trade Crushed Dark Gems or Dark Gems for Emeralds, though their higher-level trades are not particularly noteworthy.

EvilCraft Enchantments

EvilCraft adds several unique enchantments to the game:

Curse of Breaking (Levels 1–3)

The opposite of Unbreaking — this enchantment causes your tool or weapon to degrade faster. It is not particularly useful intentionally, but you may find it appearing as an unwanted side effect on repaired items.

Life Stealing (Levels 1–3)

When applied to weapons, Life Stealing causes you to steal a portion of your enemy’s health with each hit — a straightforward but powerful enchantment.

Poison Tip (Levels 1–3)

Applies poison to enemies on hit. The basic level one version can be crafted by combining a Book with a Poison Bucket in a crafting table.

Unusing

A highly practical enchantment. When your tool or weapon reaches critically low durability, Unusing will make it temporarily unusable rather than letting it break entirely. This gives you enough time to repair it without risk of losing the item. You can safely use a tool right down to one durability point.

Curse of Vengeance

Spawns a Vengeance Spirit when the enchanted item is used. Vengeance Spirits are covered in the next section.

Miscellaneous Items

Dark Tank

Crafted with Dark Blocks, Iron Blocks, and Glass, the Dark Tank stores up to 16 buckets of liquid. You can combine two Dark Tanks together in a crafting table to create one that holds 32 buckets — and you can keep combining them to increase capacity further.

Spikes and Spiked Plate

Craft Spikes using Iron Ingots and Dark Gems, then combine them into a Spiked Plate. The Spiked Plate damages mobs that walk over it but will not harm you. It can also be placed on a pedestal to drain blood from mobs — blood being a critical resource we will cover shortly.

Spiky Claws

A combination weapon and tool with 6 attack damage. Particularly effective against soft materials.

Obscured Glass

A glass variant that reduces the amount of light passing through while still allowing you to see through it. Useful for mob farm designs.

Exalted Crafter

Crafted with Crushed Dark Gems, the Wooden Exalted Crafter is a portable item that functions as both a chest and a crafting table in one. You can also make an Ender Chest version by substituting the chest component.

To make the Empowered Exalted Crafter, place a Lightning Grenade on the ground and strike it with lightning. The empowered version will never de-spawn, cannot be destroyed in lava, and will not disappear if dropped — making it the ultimate portable storage and crafting solution.

Display Stand

A purely decorative item that allows you to display any item on a stand. Great for organisation or aesthetic builds.

Vengeance Spirits and the Vengeance Ring

The Vengeance Ring

The Vengeance Ring is crafted using Crushed Dark Gems and is one of EvilCraft’s most useful early items. Shift right-click it to activate it, granting you:

Jump Boost III

Invisibility

Haste

Speed

The trade-off is that the ring may attract or passively summon Vengeance Spirits — ghostly entities that spawn when you kill mobs while the ring is active. They will attempt to attack you but are generally not very threatening.

The Vengeance Focus

Upgrade the Vengeance Ring using Crushed Dark Gems to create the Vengeance Focus. This upgraded item allows you to capture Vengeance Spirits. To do this, you also need a Box of Eternal Closure, crafted using a Potion of Weakness and a few other components.

When a Vengeance Spirit spawns after killing a mob, right-click near the spirit with the Vengeance Focus to push it towards the Box of Eternal Closure. Kill mobs near the box to make capturing easier — the spirit will then be sealed inside.

Managing Vengeance Spirits

If you love the buffs from the Vengeance Ring but don’t want spirits constantly damaging you, here are two solutions:

Burning Gemstone — made by smelting a Dark Block (nine Dark Gems). Passively converts Vengeance Spirit damage into hunger instead of health loss.

Spectral Glasses — makes you completely invisible to Vengeance Spirits. Requires Garmon Bozia (a late-game ingredient covered at the end of this guide).

The Second Age: Blood Mechanics

The Second Age in EvilCraft is all about blood. Blood is the primary resource for powering machines, repairing tools, and progressing through the mod’s later content. Everything in this section revolves around collecting, storing, and using it.

Blood Extraction

Craft a Blood Extractor using three Spikes, some glass, and a Dark Gem. Keep it in your inventory while killing mobs and it will automatically fill with blood. It starts by holding about 5 buckets worth (displayed in millibuckets). You can combine two Blood Extractors together in a crafting table to double the capacity — keep combining them to increase storage further. You can also use Dark Tanks in conjunction with the extractor to store even larger quantities.

Creating a Blood Pool

Right-click with your Blood Extractor on the ground to pour blood and create a source block of blood. If the blood pool is exposed to the sky and it is not raining, it will slowly harden over time (approximately three minutes per block, though growth ticks can be random).

Once you have at least five source blocks of blood in the pool, throw a Dark Gem into it. The gem will absorb five source blocks of blood and transform into a Dark Power Gem — a key crafting component used throughout EvilCraft.

Hardened Blood Shards

Hardened blood has additional uses:

Break hardened blood with your fists or a pickaxe (without Silk Touch) and it reverts to liquid blood.

Left-click hardened blood with a Flint and Steel (as if mining it) to get Hardened Blood Shards.

Mine hardened blood with a pickaxe that has Silk Touch to collect it as a block, then smelt it to receive nine Hardened Blood Shards.

Blood Infusion Core

Surround a Dark Power Gem with Hardened Blood Shards in a crafting table to make the Blood Infusion Core. This component is used to craft the two most important blood machines: the Blood Chest and the Blood Infuser.

Blood Machines

The Blood Chest

Place the Blood Chest down and shift right-click your Blood Extractor on it to fill its internal blood tank. Place damaged tools or weapons inside the chest and the blood will slowly repair their durability.

Be aware: there is a chance that repaired items will gain negative enchantments such as the Curse of Breaking. There are ways to remove these — covered below with the Purifier.

The Blood Infuser

Surround the Blood Infusion Core with Cobblestone to craft the Blood Infuser. This machine is a far more efficient way to produce Dark Power Gems — requiring only 250 millibuckets of blood and a Dark Gem, with a 10-second processing time. After your first few pool-based conversions, the Blood Infuser should be your primary source of Dark Power Gems.

Other useful Blood Infuser recipes include:

Dead BushUndead Sapling (grows into an Undead Tree that periodically drops blood stains — a passive blood source)

Bloody Cobblestone (decorative)

Block of IronPromise Acceptor (used for machine upgrades)

The Undead Tree

Bone meal an Undead Sapling and it will grow into a large, eerie Undead Tree. This tree periodically drops blood stains on the ground around it, providing a completely passive source of blood when combined with a Sanguinary Pedestal (see below).

Promises and Machine Upgrades

Using your Blood Infuser, you can craft Bowl of Empty Promises with three Dark Power Gems. Adding Crushed Dark Gems gives you a Dusted Bowl of Promises. From here, you can craft tiered upgrades called Promises of Tenacity:

Tier 0 — base bowl, requires 5 buckets of blood in the Blood Infuser

Tier 1 — Promise of Tenacity I, requires Iron Promise Acceptor + Spider’s Eye

Tier 2 — requires the Tier 1 promise + Gold Promise Acceptor + Ender Pearl

Tier 3 — requires Tier 2 + Diamond Promise Acceptor + Eye of Ender

These promise upgrades can be slotted into EvilCraft machines (like the Blood Infuser, Colossal Blood Chest, and Sanguinary Environmental Accumulator) to boost their performance. Key upgrade types include:

Promise of Tenacity — general machine upgrade

Promise of Productivity — increases machine blood efficiency by x1.5

Promise of Velocity — doubles machine processing speed

Promises of Tenacity also unlock transmutation recipes in the Blood Infuser, such as:

Humanoid Flesh → Leather

Dirt → Grass (using a small amount of blood)

Coal + Promise of Tenacity → Waxed Coal (doubles coal efficiency)

Book + Promise of Tenacity → special infused book (used later in the Purifier)

The Sanguinary Pedestal

Craft the Sanguinary Pedestal using Dark Gems. It passively drains blood from blood stains in the surrounding area. Upgrade it to the Powered Sanguinary Pedestal (made with Dark Power Gems) and place a Spiked Plate on top — it will then also drain blood directly from mobs that walk over the plate.

Place a Powered Sanguinary Pedestal near your Undead Trees and it will continuously collect blood from the falling blood stains. Place a Dark Tank adjacent to the pedestal and blood will automatically transfer into the tank for storage.

The Purifier

The Purifier is used to remove negative enchantments from tools and weapons that may have been applied by the Blood Chest. Place the affected tool inside the Purifier along with a bucket of blood and it will cleanse any negative effects.

The Purifier has three functions:

Remove negative enchantments from tools using blood.

Extract positive enchantments from tools onto a book — fill the Purifier with three buckets of blood, place your tool inside, then right-click with an infused book (Book + Promise of Tenacity, blood-infused). The enchantment transfers from the tool to the book.

Extract potion effects from living creatures — place a mob with a potion effect inside the Purifier along with an empty bottle and blood. The potion effect transfers to the bottle and the mob is freed of the effect.

Enchanted Chalices

Craft Enchanted Chalices to passively distribute blood. Interestingly, zero chalices in a crafting table creates two. You can then put one of those two back into the crafting table to make two more — effectively allowing you to keep multiplying your supply.

All placed chalices are linked together like an Ender Chest, but for blood. Blood is split evenly between all of them. Place one next to your Powered Sanguinary Pedestal to receive blood, and carry another in your inventory — shift right-clicking the carried chalice will attempt to fill any blood-holding containers in your inventory automatically.

The Colossal Blood Chest

If your standard Blood Chest becomes too small, you can upgrade to the Colossal Blood Chest. Build a hollow 3×3 structure using Reinforced Undead Planks, place one Colossal Blood Chest block anywhere in the wall, and the multiblock structure will activate. This version has a much larger blood tank, supports Promise upgrade slots, and — importantly — will never apply negative enchantments to repaired items.

Note: the Colossal Blood Chest is most efficient when repairing many items at once. Repairing a single item will consume a disproportionately large amount of blood.

The Sanguinary Environmental Accumulator

You can craft your own version of the Environmental Accumulator found in Dark Temples. To do this, you will need:

A Blood Infusion Core

Garmon Bozia (late-game — see final section)

An Environmental Accumulation Core — obtained by breaking the accumulator in a natural Dark Temple

Blocks of Iron

Place the crafted Sanguinary Environmental Accumulator wherever you like. Surround it with eight Dark Tanks — all of which must be full of blood — to power it. Once active, it functions just like the temple version and supports Promise upgrade slots.

EvilCraft Tools

The Broom

The Broom is a flyable mount unique to EvilCraft. It is assembled from three parts:

Rod — determines the broom’s main properties

Brush — controls maneuverability

Cap — affects balance

Each part is crafted by combining a base part (Bear Rod, Bear Brush, Bear Cap) with a material of your choice (wood, bone, dark gem, etc.) in a crafting table. Different materials provide different performance characteristics across speed, acceleration, levitation, and maneuverability. The broom requires blood to fly.

Optimal modifiers for maximum performance include: Garmon Bozia (Never Start) for speed, Redstone for acceleration, Glowstone for maneuverability, and Feathers / Phantom Membrane for levitation. Additional modifiers include Gunpowder (flames), Blaze Powder, Obsidian (efficiency), and Dark Power Gem (blood efficiency).

Note: Broom crafting may not be available in all versions. It has been confirmed unavailable in version 1.21.1. To locate broom parts in JEI, search for Dark Stick (used to make the Bear Brush and Bear Rod) or search the components directly. The Skull Cap is crafted from two Crushed Dark Gems and one Dark Gem.

Blood Pearl of Teleportation

Made from Ender Pearls and Dark Power Gems, the Blood Pearl of Teleportation is a reusable Ender Pearl. Fill it with blood and use it to teleport — much more sustainable than single-use Ender Pearls.

Invigorating Pendant

Removes negative potion effects when activated and can even extinguish fire. Powered by blood.

Primed Pendant

An upgrade of the Invigorating Pendant. The Primed Pendant can hold one potion effect. Right-click the pendant with a potion to store that effect, which it will then apply to you passively.

Effortless Ring

Grants the effects of Promise of Velocity and Promise of Productivity — making you walk faster, jump higher, and step up blocks more easily. Simply hold it anywhere in your inventory to benefit. Hold Shift to disable the step-up assist if preferred.

Kineticator

A magnet-like item. Shift right-click to toggle attraction, and right-click to adjust the range of effect. The repelling version pushes items away instead.

Scepter of Thunder

Summons a lightning strike on use. Note that it is single-use only.

Vengeance Pickaxe

Comes with the Curse of Bewitching III but also has Fortune V, making it excellent for farming Crushed Dark Gems from Dark Ore.

Gemstone Torch

Crafted from a Burning Gemstone (made by smelting a Dark Block), this torch gives four Gemstone Torches. Placing them prevents Vengeance Spirits from spawning in the surrounding area.

EvilCraft Weapons

Vein Sword

The Vein Sword comes with Looting II and also boosts the amount of blood collected from mobs when you kill them — making it a strong companion to your Blood Extractor.

Mace of Distortion

Hold right-click to charge the mace and release to unleash a force blast that knocks back nearby enemies. Set the power level from 1 to 4 by shift right-clicking. Requires blood to operate.

Necromancer Staff

Right-click a mob with the Necromancer Staff to summon zombies that attack it. The staff must make direct contact with the target mob to trigger the summon. The summoned zombies disappear once the target mob dies. Crafted using skulls, Dark Power Gems, and an Empowered Inverted Potential.

Mace of Destruction

Hold right-click to charge and release to trigger an explosion. Set to power level 4, it creates a significant explosion. As with all blood-powered items, ensure the mace has enough blood before use.

Mob Farming with EvilCraft

The Spirit Furnace

The Spirit Furnace is EvilCraft’s passive mob farm machine. Here is how to set one up:

Kill a mob and immediately place your Box of Eternal Closure on the ground nearby.

Use your Vengeance Focus to guide the resulting Vengeance Spirit into the box.

Break the sealed box with a pickaxe — it will retain its contents when picked up.

Build a hollow structure using Dark Blood Bricks (regular Dark Bricks infused with blood). The hollow interior must match the dimensions of the mob you are farming (e.g. a zombie or skeleton requires a 1×2 hollow space).

Seal the top of the structure.

Place a Spirit Furnace block on one of the walls and right-click it to activate the multiblock.

Fill the Spirit Furnace with blood and insert your sealed Box of Eternal Closure into the dedicated slot.

The Spirit Furnace will now continuously reanimate the captured mob’s spirit and generate loot indefinitely. It does consume blood, so pairing it with Undead Trees, Powered Sanguinary Pedestals, and linked Chalices for passive blood supply is strongly recommended.

The Spirit Reanimator

The Spirit Reanimator works similarly to the Spirit Furnace but serves a different purpose: it converts the contents of a Box of Eternal Closure into a Spawn Egg. Place the sealed box into the Spirit Reanimator along with blood and a regular Minecraft egg. After approximately 20 seconds, the machine will produce a spawn egg for whatever mob was captured.

Note: this process can only be done once per box. After the spawn egg is created, the box will be empty.

Final Ingredient: Garmon Bozia

Garmon Bozia is the final crafting ingredient in EvilCraft. It is required for:

Rejuvenated Flesh (infinite food)

Sanguinary Environmental Accumulator

Mace of Destruction

Spectral Glasses

Primed Pendant

Step 1 — Craft the Piercing Vengeance Focus

Upgrade your basic Vengeance Focus using:

Four End Crystals (crafted from a Ghast Tear, an Eye of Ender, and Glass using the standard Minecraft recipe)

Two Blood Orbs (craft an Empty Orb from Glass and Iron, infuse it with a Promise of Tenacity and blood in your Blood Infuser)

Four Popped Chorus Fruit

Combine these around your Vengeance Focus to create the Piercing Vengeance Focus.

Step 2 — Kill Vengeance Spirits for Vengeance Essence

Vengeance Spirits can only be killed using the Piercing Vengeance Focus. Kill a mob to spawn a Vengeance Spirit, then right-click the spirit repeatedly with the Piercing Vengeance Focus until it dies. It will drop Vengeance Essence.

Step 3 — Materialize the Essence

Surround your Vengeance Essence with Crushed Dark Gems in a crafting table to make Materialized Vengeance Essence.

Step 4 — Infuse in the Blood Infuser

Place the Materialized Vengeance Essence into your Blood Infuser with the required blood. After approximately one minute of processing, you will receive Garmon Bozia. Congratulations — you have completed EvilCraft.

Summary and Conclusion

EvilCraft is a brilliantly designed magic mod that rewards exploration and progression. Starting from mining your first Dark Ore with a Fortune pickaxe, through building blood-powered machines, setting up passive mob farms with Spirit Furnaces, and finally crafting Garmon Bozia — every step feels meaningful. The mod shines particularly well in modpacks with an adventure or dark magic theme, and its tools, weapons, and blood mechanics integrate neatly with many other popular mods. Whether you are here for the utility or the atmosphere, EvilCraft has plenty to offer.
