How To Make An Advanced Focus In Thaumcraft 6

Want to cast even more powerful spells in Thaumcraft 6? Then you’ll need to upgrade from a basic focus to an Advanced Focus. Unlike the basic version, you can’t craft this in the Crucible — you’ll need to use Infusion Crafting. This guide walks you through everything step by step, from setting up your Infusion altar to completing the quest in the Thaumonomicon.

Setting Up Infusion Crafting

If you haven’t set up Infusion Crafting yet, don’t worry — it’s straightforward. First, make sure you have it unlocked in the Thaumonomicon. You’ll find it under Arcane Infusion — look for the quest simply called Infusion and unlock that.

To build the setup, place Arcane Stone blocks in a pattern around a central point. Place a Pedestal in the middle, then right-click it with a Salis Mundus to transform it into the Runic Matrix. Arrange additional pedestals around the matrix, and optionally place candles nearby to help stabilize the infusion process.

Ingredients You Need for the Advanced Focus

Before starting the infusion, gather the following ingredients:

1x Blank Lesser Focus (this goes on the central pedestal)

1x Ender Pearl

1x Diamond

2x Quicksilver

50 Ordo vis (stored in a nearby Warded Jar)

50 Praecantatio vis (stored in a nearby Warded Jar)

You can verify the exact recipe by opening the Thaumonomicon, navigating to Advanced Focus, and clicking on it. The recipe clearly lists: Diamond, Ender Pearl, Quicksilver x2, plus 50 Ordo and 50 Praecantatio from nearby Warded Jars.

Checking Your Vis Supplies

Before starting the infusion, check that your Warded Jars have enough vis. You’ll need at least 50 Praecantatio and 50 Ordo. If you’re running low on Ordo, you can smelt it up in your Arcane Smeltary. If you have the Thaumic JEI add-on installed, you can click on Ordo in the Thaumonomicon to see which items yield the most of it — very handy for topping up quickly.

Performing the Infusion

Once everything is in place, place the Blank Lesser Focus on the central pedestal by right-clicking it. Place the remaining ingredients — Ender Pearl, Diamond, and both Quicksilver — on the surrounding pedestals.

Equip your Caster’s Gauntlet, then right-click the Runic Matrix itself to begin the infusion. You’ll see the altar start pulling Ordo and Praecantatio from your nearby Warded Jars, and then begin consuming the physical ingredients from the pedestals — first the Diamond, then the Quicksilver, and finally the Ender Pearl.

After a few moments, the infusion will complete and you’ll receive a Blank Advanced Focus.

Using Your New Advanced Focus

With the Blank Advanced Focus in hand, head over to your Focal Manipulator and place it inside. You’ll notice immediately that the upgraded complexity cap has increased — from 15 on the basic focus up to 25 on the advanced one — giving you significantly more room to build powerful, complex spells.

Completing the Thaumonomicon Quest

Don’t forget to head into your Thaumonomicon, navigate to Advanced Focus, and complete the associated quest to unlock any further progression tied to it.

Summary

Making the Advanced Focus in Thaumcraft 6 requires setting up an Infusion altar, gathering a Diamond, Ender Pearl, and two Quicksilver, and having 50 Ordo and 50 Praecantatio ready in nearby Warded Jars. Once infused, place the Blank Advanced Focus into your Focal Manipulator to start crafting spells with a complexity cap of 25 — a major step up from the basic focus. Happy casting!
