How to Tame & Use Owls in Hexerei – Complete Guide

One of the most charming features of the Hexerei mod is the addition of tameable Owls. These magical birds aren’t just for show — they can carry packages and letters to other players, making them an incredibly useful familiar, especially on multiplayer servers. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know: how to tame owls, how to send deliveries, and where to find owls out in the world.

How to Tame an Owl in Hexerei

When you come across an owl in the wild, you can tame it using raw salmon or raw cod. You have two options for feeding it: place the fish on the ground near the owl, or simply right-click directly on the owl to feed it. Once you see love hearts appear above the owl, it is successfully tamed.

If you’d like to breed owls, you can do so using raw rabbit. This is handy if you want a fleet of delivery owls ready to go.

Sending Packages and Letters with Your Owl

Tamed owls can deliver two types of items to other players: a Courier Package and a Courier Letter.

Using the Courier Package

Right-click on the Courier Package to open it. You can place a large number of items inside — it accepts full stacks. Once you’ve loaded it up, seal it to create a finished package ready for delivery.

Using the Courier Letter

The Courier Letter works similarly — right-click to open it, type your message, and then seal it. It’s perfect for sending notes to other players on your server.

Sending a Delivery via Your Owl

Once your package or letter is sealed, right-click on your tamed owl while holding it. A list of available destinations will appear. Select the destination you want to send it to and confirm. The package will disappear and teleport directly to the chosen depot location.

Setting Up a Courier Depot

If you right-click your owl and see “No Destinations”, it means you haven’t set up a Courier Depot yet. You’ll need to craft and place one. Once placed, right-click the depot to give it a name — for example, “Monk-a-Mail”. After naming it, the depot will appear as an available destination when sending items via your owl.

This system is especially powerful on multiplayer servers — you can send packages and letters to any player who has a registered depot, making owl mail a genuinely useful in-game postal system.

Customising Your Owl

Your tamed owl has a few fun customisation options. By shift right-clicking on your owl, you can place an item in its hand for decorative or storage purposes. You can also place a witch’s hat on your owl to give it some extra magical flair.

Additionally, owls have a favourite block mechanic — placing your owl on its preferred block will increase its happiness, though this is currently a cosmetic feature.

If you’re struggling to find owls out in the world, keep an eye out for a naturally generated Owl Post Office structure, nestled within forests. This is where the dungeon owls manage all magical deliveries. You can enter the post office and tame the owls found inside, giving you an easy way to get started with the courier system.
