How To Get The Thaumonomicon In Thaumcraft 6

Getting started in Thaumcraft 6 can feel overwhelming, but the very first thing you need is the Thaumonomicon — the mod’s essential guidebook. Without it, you simply cannot progress through Thaumcraft. This guide walks you through every step, from finding your first crystals to crafting the Thaumonomicon and opening it for the first time.

Step 1: Find and Mine Thaumcraft Crystals

The first thing you need to do is go out and find Thaumcraft crystals in the world. These crystals spawn on cave ceilings, on the sides of mountains, and throughout caves and caverns. The main crystal types you will encounter are: Air, Fire, Water, Earth, Order, and Entropy.

You can mine these crystals with your bare hand — no tools required. Simply walk up to one and mine it like any other block.

The Crystal Message

When you pick up your first crystal, you will receive a message in your chat that reads: “Your fingers tingle strangely as you handle the crystal. What does it mean? Maybe some rest will inspire you.” This is your cue that something important is about to happen — but don’t sleep just yet.

Step 2: Collect Three Different Crystal Types

Before you sleep, you must make sure you have three different types of crystals in your inventory. It doesn’t matter which three you choose — for example, Air, Water, and Fire will work perfectly. The key requirement is that they must be three different types, not three of the same.

Step 3: Sleep to Trigger the Strange Dream

Once you have three different crystals in your inventory, find a bed and sleep through the night. This step is mandatory — you cannot skip it. When you wake up, you will see a new message: “You are awakened from a strange dream. You quickly write it down before the memory fades.”

At this point, a new item called the Strange Dreams book will appear in your inventory. This book contains hints about what to do next, but as long as you follow this guide, you have everything you need.

Step 4: Craft Salis Mundus

Head to your crafting table. To craft Salis Mundus, you will need the following ingredients:

3 different Thaumcraft crystals (the ones you collected)

1 Bowl

1 Redstone

1 Flint

Place these items in your crafting table to produce Salis Mundus. Remember — this recipe will only work if you have already completed the previous steps. You cannot skip straight to crafting; the game requires you to have mined the crystals, collected three different types, and slept first.

Step 5: Create the Thaumonomicon

With your Salis Mundus in hand, the final step is simple:

Craft a Bookshelf and place it down in the world.

Hold your Salis Mundus and right-click the bookshelf.

The bookshelf will transform into the Thaumonomicon. Pick it up — you’ve just crafted the most important item in all of Thaumcraft 6!

Using the Thaumonomicon

Open the Thaumonomicon to see its interface. You will notice a series of tabs on the left side of the screen. As you progress through the mod and unlock new knowledge, more tabs will become available. Start by clicking the Fundamentals tab, then select First Steps to begin your journey into Thaumcraft 6.
