Understanding Chicken Nests

To use it, simply place the nest down in an area where you’ve penned your chickens—for example, in an enclosure made with Oak Fences. Chickens will automatically lay their eggs directly into the nest without any additional setup required.

However, the chicken nest has a limited egg capacity. In a typical setup, you can expect to collect only a few eggs at a time (approximately 1-2 eggs per nest). While this works well for small operations, you’ll want to consider upgrading to a chicken coop if you’re planning to scale up your chicken farm.

Upgrading to Chicken Coops

The chicken coop is an upgraded version of the chicken nest and offers significantly better egg production. Unlike the nest, the coop can hold many more eggs and supports unlimited chickens as long as they can access the block to deposit their eggs.

When chickens interact with a coop, they actually disappear into the block (similar to how bees enter a bee house). To collect your eggs, simply right-click the coop. A single right-click can yield up to 10 eggs at a time, making this a far more efficient option for larger farms.

Crafting the Chicken Coop

The chicken coop is crafted as an upgraded version of the chicken nest, so if you have the materials available, it’s highly recommended to construct coops rather than relying solely on nests. This upgrade significantly improves your egg farming efficiency.

Automating Chicken Breeding

Once you have your egg collection system in place, you can take the next step and automate chicken breeding. This requires adding a feeding trough to your setup.

Fill the feeding trough with seeds. The trough will automatically distribute food to nearby chickens, causing them to breed. When monitoring your setup, you can use the Jade mod to view detailed information about your blocks, such as the amount of seeds stored in the trough (for example, “4 times week seeds”).
